This B&B is right on the water in Grand Bank, which is an interesting small town. The Thorndyke is an old, refurbished house with furnishings that fit the overall ambiance, and which we found to be quite charming. Colleen, the owner, is a whirlwind of activity and very kind and helpful. You can sit on the large screened porch and... More

We arrived on a foggy, rainy day at the end of September so we did not experience the full benefit of the excellent location by the ocean. The house is packed with history and beautiful antiques and one feels compelled to take just as many photos inside as out. We were disappointed that we did not meet the owners as... More

One doesn't expect to find this level of excellence in a place as far off the beaten track as Grand Bank, but the Thorndyke was by far the finest accommodation we had in Newfoundland on a recent trip. The building was built in 1919 and is furnished in the eclectic elegance of the Edwardian period. The rooms are spacious and... More

I debated only giving 3 stars to this place because our room was so dusty. It was clear certain spots were just not regularly dusted and the floor looked like they never move the furniture to dust in the corners. They also never changed the sheets, cleaned the floors, changed out the bath mat, etc over the course of our... More

Great B&B across the street from the ocean in Grand Banks. In Room 2 you can sit up in bed in the morning and look out the window to the ocean. Breakfast is great and the dining room is conducive to conversation with strangers. Host and family very friendly, proud of their place. When you think great B&B, this is... More

If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is all chrome and plastic an glitz, keep looking. If you want to stay somewhere that makes you feel as if you have slipped back through the ages and are stayng in an old Grand Bank home, then this is the place you should stay. Built in the early 1900's by... More

I have the privilege of living a couple doors down from the Thorndyke, and the owners Colleen and Glynn have made it an amazing place for lunch and dinner. I have never had a bad meal at the Thorndyke, nor have I ever had bad customer service. If you are ever in Grand Bank for any reason, I trip into... More

I stayed here enroute to St. Pierre for one night with my 88 year old Mother. Everything was lovely. The Dinner and Breakfast were superb, and far exceeded our expectations. Owner/operator, Colleen, was very friendly and helpful, albeit distracted with her own foot infection. The house is very old and a little bit run-down, albeit highly costly to keep up.... More

Had supper there a few weeks ago and the baked cod was delicious with an assortment of fresh vegetables. Would certainly dine there again. The wine list was handwritten which was refreshing even though it was a very short list. All 6 of us enjoyed our meals which included steak and the seafood platter. The owner shared some of the...
