At first arrival it felt like we had arrived in our own love story, my partner and I wanted to go somewhere that would be a special memory for the rest of our lives. We only stayed for 2 nights and it felt as if time had stopped for us. We could work everywhere that we needed. Fine food and... more

We were in Montreuil sur Mer to meet up with family and walked around the town to find a hotel/restaurant. Suddenly we came upon this wonderful, old building. Large, ancient doors opening on to a hidden courtyard, filled with flowers on all levels. Enchanting. We ate outside and had delicious food served by friendly, helpful people. We live in France,... more

A unique hotel, both in age - about 350 years - and style. A great welcome from the owners in the pretty courtyard was a good way to begin. The food was limited in scope but was well prepared and the beds were comfy. The corridors were uneven as were the bedroom floors - as befits an ancient building. Bedrooms... more

Hotel de France, Rue Pierre Ledent, Montreuil-Sur-Mer, France. Old coaching inn with charming courtyard. Town centre. Quality rarely found in more stereotyped hotels. We stayed three nights. Victor Hugo stayed longer! Recommended. more

With the Euro so strong against sterling we were looking for somewhere reasonably cheap and cheerful to spend the night on a weekend on a weekend trip to France to buy wine and other French edible goodies. When we stepped into the courtyard of the Hotel de France we thought we had got the wrong place. It was so pretty... more

Sitting in the courtyard of the hotel de france, sipping a glass of chillled sauvignon, as the nesting swallows dip and dive and feed their young, in this peaceful glorious setting, is one of my favourite places on earth. We enjoyed a lunch in the sunshine and then walked the ramparts whivch are just a stone's throw away. We stayed... more

We returned to this eccentric, pretty hotel and again had a very good stay. Rooms were as bizarre as ever but comfortable (there is a bit of traffic at odd times in the street outside so maybe a room on the side street or the back is best if you like to sleep with the window open) and housekeeping as... more

Thank goodness its not everybodies cup of tea! That is the delight of Montreuil and the hidden gem of the Hotel de France: the fact that the English have not taken over! The building oozes with French charm and character and one can feel the centuries of history pass one by within the court yard walls- a secret garden full... more

I was a little anxious before arriving having read the mixed reviews on this site. We where a party of 5 adults and stayed for 2 nights in April and booked 3 rooms. This hotel is truly unique but in a musty, dirty, uncomfortable and damp kind of a way not in the shabby chic way others have described. The... more

The best thing about this place is the friendly greeting from the couple who are running it (temporarily), and the location is fine. The hotel is a lovely old building (from the outside) and Montreuil is a lovely town. The rooms themselves are dire - tatty old carpet, compacted bedding, broken down mattresses, rusting taps, chipped vanity etc. The toilet... more
