Cheap for the area and you get what you pay for. Had a nice vibe and was given useful information about the area and buses etc but the room had huge gaps in around doors and windows so no way of keeping bugs out, communal areas like the bathroom and kitchen were pretty dirty and there didn't seem to be... Reasonably priced for the basic rooms. Breakfast was not included when we stayed which was a bit of a shame considering it is advertised as included. Lucky for us the kitchen facilities were really good so making our own was no trouble. Wifi is really good and worked really well in our room. Tree top bar is a cool little... More

A cozy hostel with very helpful management. Unfortunately there was a break in at one of the rooms during our stay. If you have the choice I think it is better to stay at one of the rooms in the middle of the compound where the light is on and people are walking to decrease the risk of unwanted visitors.

Thank you for your review. I am so sorry that you suffered this unpleasant incident. Sadly opportunist thieves exist everywhere, in your home town and also here, and there are very few places left in the world where you can sleep with your door unlocked at night. We have implemented new security measures since this incident such as new deadbolts... More

We stayed at the Funky Dodo several different times, as Hopkins became our "home base" for other explorations. We stayed in several different rooms, and while they are quirky- as you would expect with a hostel, they were all clean and comfortable. The hammocks, kitchen, and bar were great places to talk to other travelers. The staff were always working... More

I had a great 2 nights here. It is very rustic as I expected (and wished). No luxury at all, but that didn't mean any trouble to me. The dorm is big and the beds are comfortable. The bar is good (nice music, great sofa) and I met lots of funny people.

Stayed here for three nights in a dorm room. Hopkins is a funny little town, not much to do and we could of easily gave it a miss. The funky dodo rooms were ok, however the bathrooms and outside area were quite dirty. The only reason you would stay in hopkins would be to do some sort of tour but... More

The Funky Dodo was great! We are a couple in our late 20's traveling long term through Central America and for a budget traveler this place is exactly what we look for. Clean rooms, a kitchen for guest use, hammocks to relax, 2 full size fridges, close to the beach, welcoming staff, and a great owner! I find it a... More

Private room w/shared bathroom, $46 BZD/night for two, 14th-16th April 2014 Vibe: Funky Dodo ticks all the perfect hostel boxes upon arrival: lots of colour, an outdoor kitchen and several hammocks. However, after a few nights, certain inadequacies become all too prominent. Location: Central location, a one minute walk from bus stop and close to all amenities. Best thing: Clearly... More

The Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel is located right in center of the original Garifuna village of Hopkins on the Caribbean coast of Belize. We have a pool, a treetop bar under a Mayan thatched roof where we serve a selection of drinks as well as breakfast and bar food all at backpacker's prices. We offer comfortable budget accommodation in the spacious 14 bed dormitory in full size single bunk beds and we have 6 private rooms that accommodate from 1 to 4 people with either shared bathrooms or ensuite /private bathrooms. We have free high speed Wi-Fi everywhere on the property and cool shaded sandy yard with a swimming pool where you can relax and chill out. We have hammocks and plenty of seating, a well equipped kitchen free of use and plenty of new clean bathrooms around the place. We have a tour desk right at The Funky Dodo from where you can book trips and will be able to get out there and see the sights for the best prices in town. We are here to help and we will make sure you know where you are going and you know how to get there and that you are fully aware of all the things to see in and around the village. The Hostel always has a good atmosphere, a wide range of music and fun people to meet and folk have good things to say about the place. The bar up under the thatch amongst the trees is a cool spot to come and relax and feel the breeze with a pina colada to hand If you are backpacking or on holiday in Belize or traveling through Latin America take some time to checkout Hopkins for water sports, wild life and nature reserves and true Garifuna culture. Within a 30 second walk from the hostel there is The King Casava bar and restaurant, internet cafe, cafes, the beach, and a supermarket. A 5 minute walk will take you to several more bars, restaurants and shops. We will help and assist you with any information you need and make sure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. The village is known as the safest place in all of Belize. You can walk the streets anywhere in the village alone at any time of day or night without a single worry. The local crowd is really friendly and kind and people and will smile and wave as you go by. A great location from where one can visit all the inland sites, the Cockscomb basin Jaguar sanctuary that covers 130 000 acres of tropical jungle, Cristal clear rivers, streams and waterfalls where you can swim and relax on the rocky formations. The Mayflower reserve is also very close by where you can study abundant wild life and stunning vegetation and see the highest waterfall in the country known as Antelope falls.
