Even though we only stayed for a single night the Crossing Backpackers gave us an amazing experience unlike most usual hostels, offering a comforting atmosphere full of character, loads of things to enjoy and a very friendly staff that makes you want to extend your stay. It's also the best place to be in if your car breaks down. Definite... More

This was one of my favorite hostels in New Zealand. If you're looking for a full-featured hostel with the latest amenities... then you'll be disappointed. It's on a farm in the middle of nowhere in the national park, you're warned in the confirmation email to bring in your own groceries, laundry is exorbitantly expensive ($5 wash + $5 dry due... More

I pretty much consider The Crossing my second home...I only stayed for six nights...that's all it took. Bryan and Miriam could not have been more hospitable, down-to-earth, and genuinely friendly. They were incredibly accommodating to any needs we had throughout our stay, despite the fact that they were quite busy with much more important issues. This place has more character... More

I stayed at the Crossing for about a week and have never felt so at home at an accommodation. From the interiors to the management, this place oozes with character and loving care. You'll find secret playrooms through closet doors, a table and chairs sized for giants, and endearing farm animals each with a unique personality. My first reaction was... More

Very chilled-out and relaxed atmosphere at The Crossing, best of all, the place has CHARACTER, from the hobbit table and chairs, to the back up 'staff', to the massive stairs, the secret wardrobe room, I'll definitely stay again!! Big thanks to Bryan for making us feel welcome and your witty personality!! Thanks again!!

Bryan & Miriam certainly looked after us as drivers and the group of school children we had with us. The accommodation was wonderful, as drivers it was great to have a self-contained room and warm comfortable beds. The meals provided were great and the hot meals waiting for us on our daily return from the mountains were greatly appreciated. If... More

Bryan and Miriam, the owners, have really gotten what the backpackers are looking for! What a wonderful stay we had at their place! Little planning from us, go with the flow was our thought and it turned out just wonderful. Both of them were really helpful with advice and trying to help us planning the rest of our trip. Shared... If you're after somewhere comfortable to rest your head between mountain adventures you won't do much better than this - clean, warm, very affordable and handy to the skifields and the Tongariro crossing. Don't let the train tracks just over the back fence put you off - you can certainly hear (and feel) the freight trains going past in the... More

We enjoyed our short stay at the Crossing Backpackers. Ignore google maps that sends you into the woods instead of the backpackers but once found it is a welcoming place with very friendly people, great rooms, more than adequate bathroom facilities, good kitchen, nice outdoors, lovely tv room and hidden extras. Conveniently close to the Alpine crossing and fantastic to... More

We arrived at 11pm with a group of 10 people for 2nights, then we found out we made the reservation for next week.. oopss... but the owner of the hostel was really nice and after half an hour he managed to give us two rooms for two nights. Best service I have ever had! The hostel is really nice, good... More
