This is an interesting old building that I'd rather visit during the day than sleep in. We had one of the dirtiest rooms we've ever stayed in. I wouldn't walk barefoot to the bathroom and the sheets were so dirty and covered with hairs that we covered our pillowcases with our clothes. I felt bad for whoever was in the room below us because the floors squeaked louder than we thought was possible. Thankfully, I'm... more

If you like historical places, you will love this! I was enthralled as we drove up the drive and the hotel came into view - what a lovely old hotel oozing charm. Greeted by a very helpful and friendly host, who offered us a smaller room initially and told us we could have a look first. It was very charming, but we really wanted a kingsize bed, and went back to ask if there was... more

Fine old hotel in process of being restored after years of neglect . lots of history on display through out the hotel and the added prospect of being hunted. we stayed in room 12A ( rooms are numbered 1-12, 12A 14 and up wards. this was a nice clean room with balcony access . We enjoyed our stay in both the hotel and the room , the staff was friendly . the Hotel offers a... more

Yep, creepy and atmospheric as everyone says. Interesting and bearable for one night but wouldn't want to stay longer. Besides, there is no real reason to stay for more than one night - once you've seen the caves there is precious little to do in Waitomo except have a drink in Curly's Bar (Surly's Bar would be more accurate - the pub that customer care forgot). On arrival at the hotel we were told that... more

TAKEN FROM MY BLOG: Surprisingly pleasant dinner in hotel . For the dessert we opted for cheese and biscuits for two so I indulged myself with a glass of Taylors 20 year old port for a mere $25 lol. The other reviews on Trip Advisor for this hotel were along the lines of Fawlty Towers and I can see what they mean just from the architecture and interiors but actually not bad for one night,... more

I have read most of the reviews of this hotel and it seems people either absolutely loved it or hated it with a vengeance and I can see why after my stay. Let me start with some honesty, I think if we get real and take off the rose tinted glasses that have been worn in some of the reviews this hotel is very shabby, tired and in some places downright gross. On the other hand... more

Yes the picture in the lobby is strange but if you bother to take a closer look you will see it is depicting the glowworm caves and they give off an eerie green glow. We found the hotel to be full of character and the food and service was great. A lovely fire welcomes you for a pre or post dinner drink in the guests lounge. It IS a historic hotel and I would hate... more

I dined there 2 times. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. I ordered seafood fettucine. I got large shrimps, scallops, mussels for just $18. The dessert was great, too. Their service was excellent. This is what Hospitality should be all about. The manager was very friendly. I paid $30 and get $80 service. I dine there every night. more

There were 7 of us visiting the caves and enjoyed our stay. Rooms were comfortable, good big beds, bathrooms were small but adequate. Great for a one night stay, good value for the price you pay. Owner and his niece were helpful and accomodating. Food was good and well presented. We plan to return next year with other friends and will happily stay there again more
