Although only an average rating, we still really enjoyed staying here. It is old and a bit worn in places, but still has charm about it that a more modern hotel simply could not emulate. The architecture, high ceilings and wide corridors, complete with squeaky floorboards, all contribute the uniqueness of the place. The bedroom we stayed in was perfectly... More

Hotel very tired. Had a delux king room new bed which was comfortable. Wall paper peeling, worn carpets, paintwork scrated and worn, chips in basin. No compendium. TV reception fuzzy. Staff pleasant we stayed one night and had no problem getting a refund for the nights we had paid for. Ifvwe had been charged back packer prices eould have been... More

Great location for the caves and to walk to restaurants. Free Wifi. Those are the main positive points. Once a beautiful old hotel, she is showing her age and there are so many ways she could be improved with a little bit of management. Staff is capable - not friendly. Breakfast is $25 per person.

Very disappointed and annoyed that I had emailed in advance(3 months prior) and booked a certain room only to find out 2 days before we were to check in that our booking was not confirmed YET I had email confirmation from them saying that it was confirmed. I was then told that they would look into the situation and let... More

I have visited this hotel many times, and certainly understand that it is old, run down, and slowly being refurbished. Totally disappointed this time, as I rang to make a booking, asking specifically that we were next door to our overseas visitors - only to find we were on two separate floors, and our room was by the night entry... We stayed 1 night in room 119 booked with WotIf $109 The hotel has the WOW factor from the outside, we both thought we had bagged ourselves a bargain. Beautiful staircase going up to the rooms, slightly dated but not to shabby. Old decor adding to the charm of this beautiful building. Checking in e were told that we could... More

We booked into this hotel for one night and that was long enough. Ours double room was freshly decorated with nice clean carpet and that is all the good I can say about this "hotel" There was a double bed in the room and that was it. No side tables or wardrobe and no items in the bathroom for to... More

We made our reservations months ahead for the largest family suite - paying premium dollar, since this was our long awaited trip to NZ. We had received confirmation email directly from the hotel. We checked in around 8:30pm, the receptionist point blank told us that our room had been given to someone else, while acknowledging that it was a paid... More

Hotel looked really cool from the outside, especially at night when we arrived. Our problem was that we had no previous reservations so we paid the high price. Room was old but it was clean. It served the purpose of a night's rest before going into the caves.

Tour guide was engaging and entertaining. Thanks Pam. It was like looking at a starry sky, only underground. Magical. To see the formations of limestone that have occurred and to realise it has takdn thousands of years is definitely a surreal experience. Worth a visit.
