We made our reservations months ahead for the largest family suite - paying premium dollar, since this was our long awaited trip to NZ. We had received confirmation email directly from the hotel. We checked in around 8:30pm, the receptionist point blank told us that our room had been given to someone else, while acknowledging that it was a paid... More

Hotel looked really cool from the outside, especially at night when we arrived. Our problem was that we had no previous reservations so we paid the high price. Room was old but it was clean. It served the purpose of a night's rest before going into the caves.

Tour guide was engaging and entertaining. Thanks Pam. It was like looking at a starry sky, only underground. Magical. To see the formations of limestone that have occurred and to realise it has takdn thousands of years is definitely a surreal experience. Worth a visit.

We stayed here for a weekend, primarily to go black water rafting (The Legendary Blackwater Rafting Co's "Black Labyrinth" tour is highly recommended). A classic old world hotel in a great location but its glory days are long past. Room was perfectly adequate - comfortable and clean. The offering at the restaurant was disappointingly lacking - quite high prices for... More

Chintzy classic hotel in need of modernisation but still does the job. Wouldn't stay too long but for a night near the caves you can't go wrong with this. Old fashioned room and bathroom but clean and comfortable enough.

This hotel is terribly dated, falling apart, smells awful, and the staff could care less. I was hoping it would be fun and unique, but when we checked in our room smelled terribly of cigarette smoke apparently because it's near a smokers deck. We asked to change rooms and the alternative had a distinct smell of body odor, but it... More

This hotel needs some loving care and attention. The room, although large, was sadly shabby and I had to evacuate about a dozen flies which were crawling on the windows when we arrived. The room was large - but the bathroom was cramped with chipped washbasin. We didn't eat in the hotel as we were told on arrival that they... More

I think they are trying, but our room was tired and faintly musty. Note that only one room actually has a balcony. Breakfast excellent. Has certainly got Old World Charm, but sadly still old fashioned accommodation which would have been good in the 1960's. No aircon but no through airflow either so stuffy. Pity, really.

The hotel has a great historic background and location is good within Waitomo Caves. (Easy access to black water rafting - an activity that one must go!) However, it is a shame that the hotel seems "dead" in someways. Bar wasn't on service due to license issue. I believe that the hotel could be modified to attract more people, who... More

We drove into town and stopped at Hu Hu bar & restaurant for lunch (fantastic place too). We looked up on the hill at the Waitomo Caves Hotel and said "We're staying there tonight". It's the most beautiful building that takes you back in time. You can imagine the wealthy tourists sitting on the terrace in the 1930's having their... More
