A lot of old charm and history. Yes room 16 is dated but we expected that and slept well. The staff were very kind and helpful and told us the grand old lady was slowly getting a make over and will keep its old world appearance. The dining room is opening again soon so we will come back, and stay... More

We booked the restaurant for a Xmas Dinner which was $49 per person. The food was basic and had minimal choice. The main restaurant had shabby carpet with no atmosphere or ambiance. The fire place had old ash and back packer type people walked through the restaurant in shorts and singlets to use the bar. We were in a group... More

I do not recommend anyone to book here, especially for those solo travellers. I came here in the long weekend, I suppose it should be more guests. But I saw no one else except the receptionist in this big hotel. I checked in at 3pm, went up to the room. I literally ran out of the place after 5 mins,... More

We booked this hotel because of its proximity to the Waitomo Caves and for the ambiance. We wanted something that didn't feel like a generic hotel that could be in any city. It's old, run down and looks like it's probably haunted (think The Shining). We loved it for those very reasons! This isn't a place I would want to... More

I loved this historic hotel. Our family had a delightful stay there recently. We were charmed by the faded elegance and architecture, even though it does need a lot of money and work to bring it up to modern expectations. We didnt have those expectations, as we had read recent TA reviews and these just made us more keen to... More

Stayed here for one night and glad it wasn't longer. The room had been prepaid, and this may be why we were assigned the worst one available. Not that there was much business, but putting guests in a room with hordes of flies, no screens, no blackout curtains and the front building lights shining through the windows all night made... The hotel is older, and not modernized, but charming nonetheless. It is 500 meters from the caves- super convenient, however it is on top of a very large hill. Be aware of this if you are carrying a lot of luggage and traveling by public transportation. There is a nice parking lot at the door if you are traveling by... More

We stayed for 2 nights at this Hotel. It's circa is early 1800s and by today's standards needs lots of TLC and refurbishing. In saying that, we loved it for its rich history, charm and very helpful staff. The Hotel has some resident ghosts which adds to the atmosphere. We stayed on the first floor and there is no lift... Charming, charming, charming. It's difficult to find another way of describing it. The building itself is very beautiful, the view is fantastic, the position is perfect and the staff is friendly. But the most important thing is how you feel inside it, it's like being transported back in time. Definitely recommended!

We booked the hotel for one night and because our two kids age 22 and 25 were traveling with us we booked room 30 which is quite large. The room was on the third floor and there is no elevator. We had to climb 3 very narrow flights of stairs with our luggage. The carpet throughout the hotel is 1980s... More
