My husband and I plus our two kids (aged 4 and 16 months) were travelling north but only made it as far as Waitomo before deciding we were both too tired to continue. It was late at night, the week before Xmas so we were unsure whether we would find anything last minute. We stumbled upon Woodlyn Park and were... More

I got told about this place off a friend and thought why not !! It is one of the strangest hotels I've stayed in but in a good way. The only 2 things I would change is put wifi and air con in. But all in all very good experience. Also Billy the owner is very friendly and helpfull !

Woodlyn Park comprises four 'motels'. One is a converted ship, one an aircraft, one a train carriage and one is modelled on hobbit houses, and they are distributed around a rustic country slope surrounded by trees, streams and sheep. We stayed in unit 4 of the ship, which comprised a bedroom at deck level and a downstairs bathroom. The bedroom... More

I stayed in an old train. I slept in it. Mad. Amazing. Very well appointed, great fluffy towels, SO atmospheric. To think 1000s of people travelled about in my hotel! Most character filled stay in all NZ. Super fun, especially for kids of every age. The plane, an old Bristol, looked so cool as did the boat. All sleeping quarters... More

I loved the idea of staying in the hobbit hole, the motel room was great. Great shower, beds and very neat. The kids loved the donkey that walks on the roof you cannot hear it from inside. The only thing I can say that disappointed me a little and it is very minor was the over grown bushes out the... More

We REALLY wanted to stay in the hobbit holes, but they were booked long before we found the place. Whoops! Instead we booked the Britanic room on the boat. It was fun! Unique. I only wish there had either been air conditioning or screens for the "windows". But overall we thoroughly enjoyed it!

We stayed in a Hobbit hole, which was a basic but cute and adequately appointed suite for a family. There was a separate bunk room for the kiddos and a nice kitchenette which came in handy as we had an early tour planned next day. The countryside was lovely and the kids loved waking up to the sounds of happy... More

We stayed in the train carriage which was set back from the other accommodation so we felt like we were the only guests at the park. The train carriage was really comfortable and the kids loved it! There is a spacious decked area outside too with remarkable views. I'd definitely recommend it and would like to visit again but for... More

If you like staying in quirky places this is for you. It's a converted railway carriage that consists of a kitchen/diner/lounge, and given the fact that it sleeps 5, it would be a bit snug if the weather dictated you couldn't eat outside. The bathroom could do with a new shower and the double bed is pushed up against the... More
