We stayed for just one night. Our room was at the front of the hotel, overlooking the high street, but we didn't find it too noisy. Very clean and comfortable. We had a good welcome when we arrived, good breakfast the next morning and even had a phone call from the staff a couple of hours after we left to... More

We have just returned from a weeks holiday in Porthmadog where we stayed at the Royal Sportsman. From check in to check out, everything was superb ! Lovely friendly staff, clean well stocked rooms, very dog friendly (we had 2 large dogs in our party) The breakfast was fabulous and there was lots of choice. The two girls who served... More

Thank you ever so much for this highly complimentary review! I will make sure all my staff see it and this reply, and will highlight it on our social media pages too! All the things you mention - excellent staff, rooms, and breakfasts - we are renowned for as an independently-owned, family and dog-friendly, hotel with 2 AA Rosette food.... More

Stayed for 3 nights on business in the area: warm welcoming staff seemed to have taken the week off - check in was indifferent - I arrived 40 minutes early but there was no offer to see if the room was ready anyway - just advised to come back later. The room was reasonable though a bit tired and dishevelled.... More

Thanks for this feedback, which we always appreciate from business guests. We do prefer any comments at all during the stay, rather than raising issues afterwards, so we can perhaps remedy them immediately? To answer the points in order: All my receptionists are usually equally welcoming and helpful. Perhaps because the hotel was almost fully-booked, they may already have known... More

This small friendly 3 star hotel is on Portmadog's main High Street, just 500 yards from the Festiniog / Welsh Highland Railways narrow guage station. The main National Rail station is close by (buses replacing trains until around late September they say), and National Express buses drop outside the hotel. If you do bring your car there's free covered parking... More

Well, these guests whom we remember well - and for all the right reasons - seem to have summed us up perfectly! It will be a great pleasure to welcome them back as soon and as often as they wish (subject to availability)! To answer their points in order: Arriva Trains will have trains running again through to Porthmadog on... More

We stayed one night as we were being picked up early for onward travel. Check in was efficient but a bit cold, no offer to take bags to the room and directions a bit vague.... The family room was £94.00 per night ex breakfast a reduction of £12.00. Room 14 was at the back of the hotel and directly under... More

All in all a mixture of views and I would like to answer them in order: This family were heading off very early next day to the Silverstone Grand Prix. He is sorry if he forgot to offer to take bags as usual - the family seemed really able and independent - and wonders if saying 'the room is just... More

Our 2nd visit to this highly traditional hotel. Bedrooms were excellent very clean and well kept. This is a very old building so it has the full panoply of creaking floors etc, if you are a light sleeper try for the top floor, otherwise you will hear the creaking of the person on the bedroom above, of course nothing can be... Thanks very much for such an honest and realistic appraisal, highly recommending us overall. To deal with your points in order: Delighted you returned to stay with us. We welcome light sleepers requesting particular rooms if they are available, and we are considering providing complimentary foam ear-plugs for those who either forget their own or request some. Our 2 AA... More

Took my Mum here last weekend for a 2 night break as she has been unwell lately. First of all the greeting from staff was nice, then we went up to our room. I know the hotel is old but we felt as if we where on a sinking ship as the room went down one side. Anything placed on... More

We welcome many guests with older relatives who are seeking to recuperate and the vast majority leave relaxed and refreshed. Overall this review contains a mix of good points - nice welcome, clean bed/ding, and nice bathroom - and issues we would like to answer. A room with a floor like a 'sinking ship' - perhaps a slight exaggeration? Guests... More

I've been here before a few times on business. This time went with my family. A nice place to stay in Porthmadog - very central, and easy to go out for a restaurant in the evening. The hotel itself is an old building but the room we stayed in had been very well modernised and had everything that we needed.... More

Great to hear how some guests initially stay for one reason such as work, and then return for another such as social. Our hotel is ideally situated for all Porthmadog's amenities and activities, including other pubs/restaurants - IF guests really do feel the need to try somewhere else when we serve the best quality lunches and dinners in our bar... I visited this pub with three colleagues when we were in the area for business; We went on recommendation of the receptionist at the local Travelodge. On first impression it is clear that the pub is traditional in its approach and appearance and, I suppose, suits Portmadog. It is a late Victorian or early Edwardian pub decorated to suit with... Business customers/guests have been more than welcome at this hotel since commercial travelers first stayed in 1862. The bar's early-Victorian traditional character will gradually be modernised without losing its authenticity - too many poor re-fits around in some places these days! We are delighted our friends at Travelodge continue to refer their more discerning guests to dine with us. And... More

A mid Victorian Inn partly modernised but spotless and charming helpful staff. The bedroom and beds were comfortable and there was a good modern bathroom. The restaurant was quite excellent with a very good choice of well prepared food. It's worth staying at this hotel just to eat there. Smart and helpful waitresses.

Another excellent review, thanks very much, similar to the previous one listed. Modernisation of decor, fixtures and fittings here is an ongoing 'style' process, but the substance of our excellent quality accommodation - for example, we now have new beds of the highest hospitality standard in all our rooms - food, drink and customer service will never go out of...
