What a first class hotel to stay! I enjoyed my little break so much at the Royal, the building is maintained to a very high standard, immaculate. My room 17, a single, was so good, and 'made-up' every day.Staff so polite, informative, efficient, excellent 'hand-picked' crew, breakfast and main meals incredible, the site has a Chef, so not 'pub-food'.Under-cover parking, and charging station... Well, what can we say in reply apart from our profuse thanks! "First-class, immaculate, hand-picked, incredible, and professional" and with real, fresh, home-made food, secure parking and even two charging stations for electric vehicles! Please book soon for Easter (which falls early this year) to get exactly the dates and/or room(s) you would most like, as we are already seeing... More

From arriving to leaving this small hotel exceeds expectation. Ffion took our initial enquiry by phone and was extremely helpful. A very professional chap then took our booking and was again very welcoming and efficient. We stayed one night in a court yard room with our two Labradors. We had a few drinks in the bar in the evening, which... More

Spent an evening here with a friend. Our waitress, Karen, was very helpful and accommodating. We arrived as evening service had finished but Karen gave us a table and the chef was good enough to keep the ovens on so we could enjoy a main and a desert. We had a Thai pie (ordered extra veg as no veg in... More

Decided to book for Sunday lunch at the Sportsman today and we were not disappointed. Fantastic food for a very reasonable price. You can choose to dine in the lounge or bar area. This is a very clean and comfortable hotel, the log fire in the bar area was a delight

First impressions are deceptive. The reception area is a somewhat tired, but the bedroom was really excellent with modern fittings, a comfortable bed and lots of careful attention to the detail that makes a stay memorable and worth recommending. The evening meal are was also excellent (but again undersold), and the well-presented breakfast confirmed that the kitchen staff are on... More

Yes they certainly are - that's why substance matters over style. As we write this response, our handyman is actually busy painting the reception walls in a much lighter, more modern shade, as part of our ongoing maintenance and improvements programme! Our bedrooms are first-class - functional with out being prissy - and the en-suite bathrooms all fully-tiled etc. And... More

Thanks for this mixed review but for 4 stars overall. We pride ourselves on exceptional staff offering good, old-fashioned professional service, on spotless and well-equipped rooms, and especially on consistently outstanding 2 AA Rosette food. So while we are thrilled you appreciated the first two aspects, we are obviously disappointed you thought two meals disappointing. We hope you told us... More

We booked to stay in this dog friendly hotel. The rooms in the patio area allocated to people with their 4 legged friends in tow were spacious and comfortable although the building was essentially older style. The rooms were squeaky clean. The bathroom had been modernised and it was kitted out with all the luxury items top hotels provide. The... More

Thanks so much for this amazing review - a fantastic start to 2016 - highlighting all that's very best about our hospitality! We are the only positively dog-welcoming (rather than just 'friendly') hotel for miles around and either our larger Courtyard family (double/twin 2-3 beds) or smaller double rooms (1 bed) are all steam-cleaned after pet use! Our beds and... More

After travelling 300 miles on a cold wet mid December evening to visit a relative in hospital, the sportsman was a very welcome find. Yes we remember this couple and their harrowing story of an injured young relative well, so it was a privilege to do absolutely everything we could to alleviate their stress! We are Porthmadog's only year-round, full-service hotel with bar and have been a warm, welcoming refuge for many a weary leisure or business traveller since 1862! On this particular night,... More
