Like the town of Massa Marittima itself, the Hotel Il Sole seems to be a place history has passed by. When it opened a quarter century ago it provided mid-range modern comfort in a historic building right in the medieval center of this charming, unspoiled town. It can still be said to offer the basics at a reasonable price (around... More

We've stayed at the Il Sole twice. It's not luxurious, but the room was very clean and if you're on the top floor (do try to get a room there) there's a partial view as far as Elba (I'm pretty sure). There's also free parking and a nice continental breakfast, and you can get additional cappuccinos from the bar in... More

We checked into this hotel in desperation as we couldn't find anywhere else affordable in the area at that time. The receptionist was not overly friendly and didn't really direct us to our room properly. The hallway to our room (when we'd worked out where it was) was dark and dingy with flickering lights and it reminded us of the... More

We've been staying at the Il Sole every couple years since it opened around 1990. At that time it was the trendy new hotel in the heart of Massa Marittima's medieval center. Alas, there is little evidence of ongoing investment in the hotel in the quarter century since. It does have all the essential amenities, but would have to be... More

The hotel was just minutes off the main square, where the Duomo is, and really quite close to everything else you could want to do in Massa Marittima. I stayed two nights and my experience was pleasant. The hotel was not the most beautiful, but it was clean and comfortable. To get to my room, I had to go down... More

The receptionist at this hotel was to say the least, ill-tempered and unhelpful and the hotel reflected it, dark and dingy.

My husband needed to go to the area for work and, being high season in Italy, everything was booked. We also needed a place that would accept dogs as this was a last minute trip and our pet sitter was booked. This was the one location with availability and would allow dogs so, despite the reviews, we booked it. It... More

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Sole just as the proprietors were about to batten the hatches for the winter. We appeared to be the only guests and should, therefore, have had our choice of rooms. Instead, we were directed to a dank, smokey room at the end of the hall on the top floor. The hallway and... More

We are a young couple (German and Mexican), We were knowing the Tuscany and we found this hotel so disapointing. Very old, they really should do something with the furniture its so old, the housekeeping are making unbereable noise since 6:30 am every day, slaming doors, laughing and shouting till 10 am. They promise in the website, Parking, but the... More

I went to Massa Marittima for its annual opera festival in July. I also registered for the opera appreciation class and italian language class with the British institute of Florence. Both of these classes were taught at Massa Marittima's Seminario Domus Bernardiana. I registered too late and could not secure a room at the seminario. The British Institute of Florence... More
