Smarmore castle has a long an interesting history, and is an ideal spot to visit the many and varied heritage sites in Co. Louth and Meath. Our hosts Peter and Eileen are very friendly and welcoming, and a great mindful of information on the castle and the surrounding area. Peter also gives excellent directions! We were given a room in... More

If you like olde worlde as opposed to modern 'all the same' hotels, you will love Smarmore Castle. The rooms are massive, one has a fantastic four poster bed, all en-suite. The Blue room is a great place to sit and relax or go for a walk in the lovely gardens and see the horses. The breakfast is perfect and... More

After hours of traversing the drumlin-dotted countryside north of Dublin, Eileen, our Smarmore Castle hostess, welcomed us into her charming 12th century castle B and B. Once the seat of the William Taaffe family, our B and B had the distinction of being one of the longest continuously inhabited Irish castles, as successive generations of Taaffes had called Smarmore Castle... We got a great welcome. The rooms are gorgeous - might have been better if ALL rooms had a four-poster bed, though... Our room had a turret-area with chairs and a window-seat - lovely. Lovely olde-worlde charm, it was gorgeous. The breakfast was delicious. Excellent value for such an unusual place to stay.

This were our last 2 nights in Ireland, and we couldn't ask for better place. We slept on the highest floor of the castle and we felt like a queen & a king. The owners have huge farm. The service was great! The owners threated us as if we own the castle. It was a very good and intresting experience,... More

Have just returned from my first visit to Smarmore and hope it won't be my last. If you like corporate glitz and gadgets, then this isn't the place for you. However, if you like a warm welcome, personal service, laid back atmosphere, big rooms, old world charm and tons of history, then you'll love Smarmore. We stayed in the Viscount... More

We arrived at Smarmore tired on our first day of driving in Ireland. It was so peaceful to walk the grounds and discover all the little surprises hidden there. The castle was the perfect combination of elegance and comfort. It is a bit out of town, but that fit our mood. The family could not ave been more helpful. I... More

We all had a lovely and unique stay in this fabulous castle and its grounds. Eileen and her husband are very welcoming and do an amazing job looking after everything. To sleep in the four poster bed and see the old sections of the castle under us was wonderful. This was a great base to explore the ancient sites around like... More

We stayed in one of the two bedrooms in the castle. The "new" house, from the early 1700's, is lovely as is the outside. Our room was large and the bathroom very modern and large. Eileen and her husband are gracious hosts. The town of Ardee is very close and offers some sights if one wants to walk around a... More
