Matemwe is a long ride from Stone Town! The roads are single lane, and once you get to the other side of the island, you come off the main paved road onto dirt. That dirt road takes you through a shanty town and "road" (HAH!) full of potholes, chickens, and shoats (sheep/goats). But you finally pull up to the entrance... More

We spent 7 nights here after a 10 day safari across tanzania. The plus points are fantastic staff, really good and everpresent management, great views and a wonderful sense of relaxation. The beach is not perfect as low tides and a large shallow area inside the reef make swimming tricky and not that attractive, on the other hand the hotel... More

We came to Matemwe for 4 days 'recovery' - before heading off on Safari and it was a great decision. We were pampered and so well fed on fresh local produce, offered excellent advice and received that wonderful Tanzanian 'welcome' everywhere we went. After dinner, we took to the hammock slung in the porch of our lodge to chill out... More

We spent 4 nights here following an 7 day safari and had a wonderful time. Our bungalow was #3 and had an upstairs loft with another bed and as all of them do faced the ocean. We did not have a plunge pool as some of the other untis did. It was really wonderful to watch the local fishermen go... More

We recently stayed at the Matemwe Lodge after an African Safari in Tanzania. I can not say enough about what a wonderful time we had there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and clean. We had a plunge pool next to our room, and alternated between the hammock, chaise lounges, and the pool. After that... More

We had been traveling for over 12 days on safari before we arrived to Matemwe Lodge for the last leg of our honeymoon trip in East Africa. The staff was superb in ensuring our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. The staff knew our names and checked in on us every day to see if we needed anything. When we returned... More

We came to Zanzibar for diving. We had some really amazing diving in Zanzibar. With that being said, the coral and the fish were amazing if you get the chance to diversify the dive trips, would recommend it. Plan to go slowly through the dives because they are shallow enough to spend an hour on each dive planning it right.... More

We stayed in the matemwe lodge for a week and it was fabulous! The large and clean bungalows have a very big bathroom with shower and bath. From the bungalows (including comfortable hammock) have great views overlooking the reef where Fisherman's boats come and go throughout the day. Several excursions can be booked like game fishing, scuba-diving, Catamaran sailing, massage... More

If you need time to relax before or after a safari this is the place to do it. We spent 5 nights and the time drifted past. Double hammock and couch outside our "hut" encouraged us to while away the hours watching the waves breaking on the reef and the dhows skimming by. Sandy and the team were amazing, arranging... More

Stayed here for 5 nights at the end of our very busy safari and we were not disappointed.Private cottage overlooking the Indian ocean was fab and to fall asleep and wake to the sound of the ocean was wonderful.Sandy and all the staff were totally switched on to the ethos of the place ie service was attentive but completely unobtrusive...
