We stayed at Matemwe Lodge for four nights after a safari in Tanzania. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy views of the beautiful Indian Ocean. The accommodations are very comfortable in private bungalows located on a small bluff right over the water. You can hear the waves at night and there is a porch an hammock to... More

We were lucky enough to spend three nights in Matemwe House, a private villa adjacent to the lodge. Cared for by George, we were grateful for his attentive care as we all arrived terribly sick from a stomach bug of sorts - and the first day he did nothing by tuck us up in bed! The villa has two double... More

This place is amazing!!! The setting, the rooms and above all the service are all spectacular. They manage to create luxury but in a very down-to-earth way, which benefits the local community. We spent our honeymoon here and it was made perfect by the hard work and kind, genuine nature of all the staff. The management team of Ross, Gina... More

Jambo! We went to Matemwe Lodge for rest and relaxation after a Safari in Tanzania and were not disappointed! The staff were always friendly, available for any help you needed yet not too invasive. I had a wonderful massage in the spa from Bertha, the massage room is situated by the edge of the cliff faces so you look out... More

I went for solitude, rest, spa and spoiling .. and I got it all and more. The service was absolutely fantastic and the staff friendly, yet subtle in their attendance. The spa is fantastic, Bertha and the girls know their stuff, situated on top of the cliff looking out to sea whilst having a massage, using the local treatments, is... More

My husband and I have traveled a lot all over er the world but this was our first trip to Africa. We love Zanzibar and loved every moment of our time at Matemwe lodge. Everything was taken care of for us and we felt super safe at all times. The food was absolutely incredible! The massages at the spa were... More

Stayed here 3 nights after a night in Stone Town. Spent two days SCUBA diving. Although there is no dive shop at the resort, they met us timely for orientation and pick-up. Was an "adventuresome" drive to get to the dive shop and then to the dive site. This is definitely not the easiest or best place to stay for... More

Matemwe is a long ride from Stone Town! The roads are single lane, and once you get to the other side of the island, you come off the main paved road onto dirt. That dirt road takes you through a shanty town and "road" (HAH!) full of potholes, chickens, and shoats (sheep/goats). But you finally pull up to the entrance... More

We spent 7 nights here after a 10 day safari across tanzania. The plus points are fantastic staff, really good and everpresent management, great views and a wonderful sense of relaxation. The beach is not perfect as low tides and a large shallow area inside the reef make swimming tricky and not that attractive, on the other hand the hotel... More

We came to Matemwe for 4 days 'recovery' - before heading off on Safari and it was a great decision. We were pampered and so well fed on fresh local produce, offered excellent advice and received that wonderful Tanzanian 'welcome' everywhere we went. After dinner, we took to the hammock slung in the porch of our lodge to chill out... More
