I did not book my stay at Matterhorn and I was not here by choice. My group of climbers and me had to get off Mt Cook earlier than planned and it seems this was the only place available due to the holiday weekend. I got to share a six bunk bed room with a fellow climber and four other... More

We came with low expectations (all other hostels we called were fully booked) and left disappointed. Room was not clean (dirt on the floor), kitchen dirty, no free wifi, some staff unfriendly. Showers were all right but thats it...

I used this as my base to go hiking in the areas that surround Lake Wanaka. It has everything you need for that, quiet and enough space for gear. The lady who ran the place was doing an amazing job of showing me around and taking care of a baby at the same time. There was never a struggle for... More

When we check-in and check-out, the receptionist was quite cold... The kitchen is dirty like the floor of the rooms. Who is, I think, never clean... Bathroom Ok. Location: Good Price : Standard Regards

Original style hostel with all you need. Clean, warm dry. Big kitchen and eating area. Probably been around longer than X base and YHA and it is cheaper. Its not got the kids feel of the other backpackers. Owner managed and run. Beds comfy. Bedding supplied. WiFi is good but you have to pay which seems to be the norm... More

Perfect location, *lovely staff and quite comfortable rooms. We've stayed in different hostels throughout New Zealand and Matterhorn was the best one so far. We wish we could stay longer! We definitely recommend it.

Great location, a minute to supermarket and pub. The front building is very clean and value for money. It was bit old but they kept it really clean and tidy.It was en suite and we paid comparatively cheap. Bed was comfy. If you were in a 4 star hotel you will be paying $100 plus for the same kind of... More

i have stayed here quite a few times over the years but never again. It was cheap but if you are planning on getting sleep forget it.There was a party in the backpackers partly arranged by the hosts which went on for ever with kids screaming, running back and forwards to the adjacent pub with no respect for the other guests. There are... This hostel really depends on what side you are on. There is the house which has home made bunk beds with lots if nooks and crannies to put your stuff. It is an old house so although it may not look it, it's clean. The kitchen is got everything you need. The common room is where everyone hangs out and... More

Best hostel!! Came here to relax and chill out after most of the great walks and other hikes I went on. Stayed in the lodge, where we enjoyed our own kitchen. Amazing location, and extreamly friendly owners! We just liked coming back! We even had a few group dinners with other guests in the lodge which where so much fun.... More
