I was hoping to stay all my days in Wanaka Bakpaka. I am glad that it did not happen. Majority of my stay in Wanaka was at Matterhorn. The place may not be top notch in cleanliness but it provides spacious rooms and bathrooms. The staff is helpful and the location is central. Pretty much what you want from your hostel.... More

Unfortunately Matterhorn South was a noisy, filthy and just an old place to stay. The lodge staff played Beer pong in common kitchen / lounge until 2 in the morning and there music was blaring all day long. I presume the communal toilets weren't cleaned for 3 days due to the sore heads of the staff. After 2 nights out... More

I regret not checking Tripadvisor before I made a reservation here, but being high season everything in Wanaka was fully booked and this place had a double room available in the backpacker unit. On arrival it looked ok from the outside and we were very happy with the central location. It's situated on the same street as the lovely Cinema... More

I was quite afraid after booking in this place and seeing such a low rating. However, it is quite fine. The room was clean, a bit outdated maybe, but nothing terrible. For about 80 bucks it is quite rare to find a fridge and TV in a room, that's a big plus. The owners were helpful. Also, there is an... More

We booked an ensuit room for a couple of nights. Unfortunately the toilet was not cleaned up so there were still some dirt in and outside. Same with the shower. I cleaned it by myself as I didn't want a discussion. The bed/mattress was saggy. The room itself was not really dirty but also not good cleaned. The building itself... More

When we arrived, the lady seemed surprised that we had a reservation and even said that she didn't think we would like the room she had for us. Like one of your other reviewers, we ended up in the 'Love Shack' which was really a large garden shed. It was outside of the main building, so we felt a little... More

this was one of the worst backpackers i have stayed in, i would suggest they take all furniture, appliances, kitchen utensils/cutlery, beds/bedding to the rubbish tip....but you get the feeling that the rubbish tip is where they got it from. the bathrooms are disgusting. i stayed in the old house which is the backpacker side. the owner was friendly but... I was in Wanaka for two weeks to ski, and found my room at the Matterhorn South to be warm and cozy in the New Zealand winter. I stayed in the lodge and used the common kitchen. The cooking facilities were adequate, and I never felt rushed or over-crowded. My room, linens, etc. were all excellent. In fact the duvet... More

We are backpackers but decided to stay in a lodge room. It was very average compared to all the other hostels we stayed in. It could use some updates in the linen and kitchen supplies. The kitchen seemed very old and worn and pots and pans were dirty. A dishcloth in the kitchen would be helpful so people can wipe... More

Hi, i came to stay with my 4month old son for a night; his first taste of Hostel life (one that both Mommy and Daddy can highly recommend!) In fact, we stayed in this very place when we first fell pregnant early last Winter and i was super crook returning from a mammoth road trip from Golden Bay. Even then,... More
