This hotel needs to be revamped urgently. The room had wallpaper hang off, badly stained sink, in fact the whole bathroom needed replacing. Unfortunately the food rather suited the hotel, poor. The location was OK but the town closes at 17.00 hrs. Poppies bar across the road was better than the hotel and there was also another bar in the... More

I hate using the lowest rating but I was very disappointed with my stay. The motel looks lovely from the outside and is close to Mt Cook and other sites but the inside is a huge letdown and needs a major refurbishment. My room is from maybe 1960 (before my time) with a built-in heating unit in the wall and... More

booked a new deluxe room and got a very old standard one because of 'double booking'. no notice or apology. got a small discount after the fact. carpets very old, stinky and pulling away, wallpaper peeling off the wall, roof leak and mould approx 1m long. to cap it off breakfast staff were very unfriendly and the scrambled and poached... We've stayed before, so we knew what to expect. It's a big hotel by rural New Zealand standards, obviously built to capture coach parties, but that's not a negative. Rooms are large and rather dated but ours was clean and shiny and completely up to standard. They have big sliding windows and a space outside which is too small to... More

Twizel is a good base for visiting Mount Cook where accommodation is expensive. We had a deluxe room on the first floor and you do have to use the stairs as there is no lift. The room was spacious and well appointed. I have read some of the other reviews and could not find fault with the room and had... More

Hello David716 Thank you for your feedback. We receive considerable feedback from guests on how well they sleep in the hotel, particularly in the Deluxe wing. I am glad to see you found the staff friendly and helpful, we do have a very good team currently. The bar can be a busy place in the Summer season. Over Winter it... More

The hotel is in a quiet village location. We had a large room with comfy beds and armchairs. The rooms are a bit tired/dated but clean. Public areas were nice.Service was friendly and efficient. We had a good dinner and breakfast. The interior did not seem well sound-insulated with regular water noises from other rooms.

70's style motel with pink laminated panel bathroom. Cica1978! Not sure when it was last cleaned! Bistro dinner was inedible.... It tasted like the Roasts had been cooked 2 days earlier and re-heated as many times. I left personal possessions in my room, my mistake but when I went back to claim them I was told they had " been... More

it suited our needs as a stop over. The hotel was clean the room was fine and the staff were really friendly. The bar meals were very good value, we had lamb shanks and mash and they were huge. Also a good range of wines by the glass, so you could try different makers and not have to commit to... More

Thank you Maria L Great to see you enjoyed some local wines and the bar meals. Many guests do enjoy that we are very close to Mt Cook and can easily enjoy the region without the cost of staying at the Mt Cook village. Thank you for taking the time to write a review. My reason for staying here was that this was one of the only hotels in the Mackenzie basin that was not full, it was a logical choice. The price is about what you would expect compared to other hotels in the area. The rooms are a bit dated and mine had one of those "old hotel room" musty smells that... More

By the exterior appearance one would assume the Mckenzie is the top property in Twizel and it may in fact be. Based on other properties seen from street it is the largest, offers a full service restaurant and has a nice corner setting. However that is where the positive aspects end. Well not exactly since the rooms are large and... More

Dear 100nations Thank you for choosing to stay with us at Mackenzie Country Hotel and for taking the time to write your review. The exterior of the building is a timeless schist construction however as you observed a small number of the older rooms have not weathered the test of time so well. I do hope the comfort of the...
