We stayed at Selva Negra for one night after hearing about it in Matagalpa and showed up with no reservation. The trip on a local bus up the mountain was a great experience, packed with locals but we got off at the tank on the side of the road and walked the 1km to the hotel. It far exceeded our... More

I went to Selva Negra just this past Thanksgiving 08. What a amazing place! I recommend to anyone that a nature lover. I plan to come back. The place is just beautiful and relaxing. I meet the owner and he was willing to chat with you for hours. It is a very relaxing place. Can be chilly in the cloud... More

We were happily suprised by our find after seeing it mentioned in Lonely planet. The setting is spectacular, although expect rain. ´The plants and trees are beautiful and there are many opportunities to hike/walk and enjoy them. There is a lot of history there and opportunity to learn more with a small coffee museum in the main lodge. It IS... More

Although this promoted as one of the best resorts in the Matagalpa area it is old and run down and there must be better places to stay. Our cottage (no 2) looked OK from the outside but the inside was dark and very tatty, this we could have put up with but the worst was the damp. The whole of... More

Selva Negra is worth the trip. The farm, mountain, and workers village were fascinating to see. I have never seen anyplace do so well to make the most of their resources. I learned a great deal and found the staff and owners to be quite friendly. The accomodations are another matter. We stayed in a a two person cabana that... More

We have been there 10 years ago, when the place was run down and mouldy. We though it must have had some improvement since then. Well, we were WRONG!! It was still run down and mouldy 10 years latter. It is a pity that the owners are just pocketing all the profits with out investing in improving the cabins, food... More

We went to Selva Negra with the purpose of taking a break after 6 month travel. And it served perfectly that purpose. The climate is fresh, there a walks into the mountains around, we saw monkeys and even a Quetzal! The room was good for the price, 15 dollars per person. We found the service excellent. We ate most of... More

Very interesting place to stay. Stayed in large cabin with missions team visiting Matagalpa. It is rustic, but what isn't in Nicaragua. Wake up to the sound of Howler Monkeys, hike for miles into the mountain jungles. A small group of us opted for a rugged hike while many of our group took the educational tour of the coffee plantation... More

I would not recommend Selva Negra! The food and service was not good, yet we were a captive audience there because it was so far away from Matagalpa. Although Mausi was the most prompt at responding to my emails, I only saw her briefly when we checked in and never again during our stay. The other staff spoke only Spanish... More

We stayed for two nights a two-bedroom cottage. The rooms were comfortable and clean, with a little sitting area and refrigerator in the "living room." Selva Negra has many things for children to do - a large playground - and swings and swingsets around every corner, animals to chase and pleasant walking trails. We enjoyed a tour of the coffee...
