We didn't stay long here, just one night. But our experience here was positive. When we arrived late in the evening, the owner was very friendly meeting us, arranging for our early morning breakfast, and recommending us to a nearby restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was next door (Bombe's) where we had an excellent meal, and spoke to the owner... More

We stayed at Hillside Residence while visiting Phonsavan to see the famous Plain Of Jars. It was a great 2 night stay. the owner is a real sweetheart and always has a smile on his face making sure the guests feel well taken care of. In a nice, polite and honest manner, lovely staff - all of them! They hooked... More

I was expecting the worst from reviews I have read about the poor quality of accommodation & indifferent staff in all of Phonsavan, but The Hillside Residence totally delighted us and I would say to everyone that you cannot go wrong by staying there. Especially loved the hot shower with good pressure; the two extra blankets provided so we were... More

A bit off of the (nonexisting) centre of Phonsavan so you need a torch to get back in the evenings (and you have to like walking, it takes about 20'). The Hillside Residence has everything you need but that's it. Nothing fancy but ok for 1-2 nights. You hear every noise from outside in the room but that's normal in... More

Recently stayed here to visit the plain of jars, it is a bit of a walk onto the Main Street but it isn't really a problem. It's clean and comfortable with a great breakfast. On the plus side a great shower. The TV in the room was unexpected and a bonus, showing some of the latest films. Which was good... More

We spent two nights here when we were in town to visit the Plain of Jars. The Hillside is a fine base to explore the jar sites, but nothing special. From what we hear, this may be the best Phonsavan has to offer, actually. Depending on who is at the desk, the service is either really friendly (the older Indian... More

Very cozy and friendly guest house. Tasty breakfast too. All rooms seem to have their own balcony. Beds are very comfortable and sjowers are hot. You can walk into the 'downtown' area as well. The wifi was weak. Staff is still learning english but was so friendly that it made up for the lack of communication ability.

I am at a complete loss to understand why this guest-house receives such glowing reviews from other travellers. My friend and I arrived at this property after being picked up in the late afternoon by our guide for the next day, the wonderful Tey. Although we had paid in advance for a room each we were shown to a shared... More

This place is really quite average but there aren't many options in Phonsavan. On the plus side, the owner was very friendly but his English is limited (and my Lao even more so). He did send someone to pick me up at the airport (free of charge). However, this person tried to sell me a private tour of the Plain... More
