Our group of 4 stayed at Hilltop Motel in late July. We were on our way up to Canada for the annual fishing trip and like to stay at hotels not far from the border. Other hotels in the area might look to be the same as the Hilltop, but there is a difference! We found the Hilltop to be... More

Just crossed border back into U.S. Stopped by Hilltop. Friendly owner Barb checked us in. Each room has a different "theme". Ours, room 28, had rustic woods feel complete with glow in the dark stars on the ceiling. Clean room with nice sheets. Reminiscent of hotels in the '50s.

I'm not sure how this is the top rated hotel in this town. The rooms are different in size, bathroom fixtures, tvs etc is likely the reason for different experiences. My bed was very uncomfortable. Breakfast is stale donuts/muffins, bread, cereal, milk, juice. The website advertises free ice, not true. There is not an ice machine and owner acts as... More

Booked this based on #1 TripAdvisor rating. I had just said to wife that northern MN could be rustic but that TripAdvisor had never let us down. There is a first for everything. I cannot believe how many rate it this high. Smallest rooms ever in my 60 years of hoteling. Light green bathtubs that I remember from the 1950s.... More

When we arrived at the hotel we were warmly greeted and were given a warning. We should turn off the roaming capabilities on our phone. Apparently the Canadians have super cell phone towers and unsuspecting users can get charged international roaming rates on their next bill. I turned my phone off. We stayed in room 18. It is a large,... More

Very friendly owner who provided good recommendations for local restaurants. The unit was very clean, and comfortable enough, although small. No fridge or microwave, or complimentary toiletries. The bathroom was small with no vanity space. There was a nice assortment of prepackaged breakfast rolls and cereals, and juice and coffee in the office.

Not bad if you're a fisherman or hunter. Definately no frills, just a bed and bathroom. The beds really need to be replaced and so do the TV's. Just coffee and cereal for breakfast and no ice machines on the premises. If you need a few more comforts this is not your place.

This is a great, clean, old fashioned motel. We have stayed here for years on our way to Canada to fish. Reservations are necessary months in advance if you are traveling through in the summer, especially on a Friday night. We make our reservations a year in advance. Owners are very nice and attentive and they now have internet. They... More

This is an old motel that has been well maintained. While dated, it serves its purpose...over night sleep on the way to Canada. Very clean and comfortable. Much better value than others in town. Will be returning in June and Sept of this year.

We got into town on a weekend, and it was quite busy. Used TripAdvisor to find a place to stay. This was rated #1, and one of the reviews stated that if you didn't bring a hairdryer, ask at the desk and one might be available. I did and they had one left. We got one of the last 2... More
