That was the name of the room so occupied. It was clean tidy, relatively spacious and quiet. The bed felt like what the inn mates might have had some years ago and breakfast is a simple continental. The ice tea in the afternoon was refreshing. Great location, close to the bus station - ideal if you don't have a car.... More

Well located to downtown Newport and near some cool restaurant bars but whole jail house theme over rated. Breakfast of frozen baked goods, no hotel bar, noisy window unit a/c. Nothing is cheap in Newport in August but our Friday nite here was over $350'ouch

This is an old house that used to be a jail many, many years ago. It has lots of character. We stayed in a superior room which was larger than a typical hotel room and was at the rear and quiet. There might be annoying street noise if you stayed at the front of the building. There was a free... More

Lovely little hotel full of character, friendly staff. Small hotel with 23 rooms, small breakfast room - sits ten so get down early or be prepared to wait. The wifi was a bit iffy. The town is a seaside resort with a lot of bars at the seafront, with a lot of people drinking heavily.

Although we drove to the beach, (10$ weekdays, 20$ weekends for parking) planned in advance, a fifteen minute drive into Middletown RI, beach #2, the excitement of downtown Newport at night was a 5 minute walk of ease.

Very nice B & B, clean, great location, all the comforts of home. The staff was fabulous, very helpful with directions and suggestions of places to eat, and things to do. Our room was great for the 4 of us. Double bed in room to the right and double bed in room to the left, full bath in between the... More

Dear MaryLinn39 -- I'm so glad you enjoyed yourselves (all except for the chirping birds!). The room the four of you shared was one of our "split rooms," which are a good option for individuals or couples traveling together who prefer sleeping apart. Split rooms are essentially a "twofer" -- there are two small but separate bedrooms with bathroom between,... More

Had a great "girlfriend" mid week trip to Newport where we stayed at the Jailhouse Inn. Room was large and beds very comfortable, clean bathroom, and nice to have a refrigerator too. The location was perfect for us, we parked the car in their free lot and walked to most locations. Nice front porch with wicker chairs where we sat... More

Dear lolliepete -- How nice to hear that you and your friends had a great time and were pleased in numerous ways! Yes, many of our rooms are quite good-sized (it's best to reserve with us directly to make sure you get the right room for your needs) and all have mini-refrigerators. Free parking and continental breakfast add a lot... More

My husband and I stayed at The Jailhouse Inn this past weekend for the Jazz Festival. The people at the front desk were very helpful in giving us tips to better access and enjoy the festival. The room on the third floor was large and clean. The bathroom was smallish but clean and adequate for our needs. There is street... More

Dear Jenn M - The Newport Jazz Festival is such a special occasion in Newport -- I'm glad you and your husband were here to experience the music, the setting and the events! It is very easy to access Fort Adams (where both the Jazz and Folk Festivals take place) from the Jailhouse, as the dock where harbor shuttles carry... More

We stay at the Jail House when my husband sails in regattas in Newport and we always have a good experience. It's clean, quiet, and well located near the water and restaurants. No car needed! Free breakfast saves you quite a bit of money, too.

Dear BTaylor73 -- Thank you very much for the kind words. We are always happy to see you (and all our sailors and their families!) whenever regattas bring you to town. You're right that no car is needed to enjoy the great variety of downtown shops, restaurants and historic neighborhoods from our location -- the only exception would be that... More

Stayed in "Group Lockup" on a girls weekend. Located within walking distance of all of the wharf attractions. I want to compliment a staff member, Sharon Riley, for her efforts to track down transportation for us after we experienced an unexpected hiccup with parking. She truly went above and beyond with the local gift and sincere concern. Her goal was... More

Dear tiffthetraveler, It makes me and the whole Jailhouse team very happy to know you enjoyed your weekend. "Gang-Lockup" is definitely a great accommodation for a small group of friends or a family -- having three rooms in one suite is a real plus. Also, it's nice and cool on the lower level in the summertime. FYI: We call it... More
