We have been back to Shadow Mountain Escape over a dozen times. This most recent time was with our dear friends from St. Louis for a little R & R and a little taste of Virginia Wine Country. Karen & Ralph do a superb job of keeping the cabins charming and immaculate. They are always updating the cabins and the... More

We stayed in the Ladybug cabin for a weekend in early-mid September. The cabin/loft has 100% timber wood framing with European-style decor. It was very intimate and cozy and very CLEAN. We enjoyed the seclusion and quietness of the property and Ralph and Karen were magnificent hosts. Skyline drive and Shenandoah National Park is a short 15-20 min drive. We... More

Dragonfly cabin was perfect. The location is perfect, located away from the hustle & bustle of town but still close enough to enjoy Luray. Close to the entrance to the Skyline Drive. The hosts are perfect. welcoming you when you get there but then disappearing unless you need them. The baked goods left as a welcoming gift are perfect!! Loved... More

Loved the location, the setting, the kindness of our hosts. If you want old European charm while experiencing the American wild nature and open spaces this is the perfect combo! We saw all sort of wild animals while hiking, including a bear, and at the end of the day, there was always a surprise treat waiting for us.... Karen's baking... More

We were so grateful to celebrate our seventh anniversary in a place created with so much passion. This is a very special experience, enhanced by the bird song and beautiful night’s stars. The baked goods were all delicious and appreciate. The cabin and grounds are a wonderful and unique escape truly buffered and different from everyday life. The proximity to... More

My husband and I wanted to relax and get away for our anniversary. I'm so glad I found SME in my research! The property and the cabins are lovely. Karen met us as we pulled in, and she really is one of the sweetest people we've ever met. Her homemade treats were so yummy, and she helped us find the... More

We enjoyed staying in the Butterfly cabin. Love the wood frame, the architecture and the interior design of the cabin. Every corner is a piece of art. The strawberry cake and cookies were so delicious that we finished them in seconds. A perfect trip.

Wonderful place to get away from it all. Just a few minutes from the Shenandoah National Park, and about 10 minutes from Luray Caverns. SME is definitely a place you want to visit if you enjoy peace and quiet. The report only has about 4 cabins, 5 if you include Karen and Ralph's. A very inspiring place to visit, I... More

We had a lovely time staying at SME! The Butterfly cabin is comfortable + cozy - and we loved the little deck! The grounds are gorgeous - I kept thinking we'd been whisked away to a fairytale forest! They love what they do because it shows in everything we see here. We were thankful for this wonderful oasis to escape... More
