We stayed in a smaller room with a private bath on a trip through New Mexico earlier this month. The staff were very friendly when we arrived and very helpful. One of the staff even offered to come upstairs to show us how the air conditioner worked and they let us know when the restaurant was closing down for the... More

I was a little skeptical at first but after reaching our room, what a suprise. It was really nice, very clean with a newly updated bathroom. We love the decor of our room that included the original furniture. The staff is extremely friendly and we were given a tour of the hotel and told of its history. We would definitely... More

Normally, this hotel would receive two stars, but given how poor Mountainair and New Mexico are, it gets three ("average") for the area. Recently opened, the accommodations are simple but perfectly adequate. Charming, lots of local culture and flair, and extremely friendly staff. The locals will tell you the hotel is haunted, but apparently they're lullaby ghosts, as I slept... More

We really enjoyed the friendly service and atmosphere at the restaurant for our lunch. Our meal was delicious and reasonably price. It was highlighted by a grand tour of the hotel. We were surprised at the spotlessly clean and comfortable rooms. The newly renovated bathrooms were showcases of masterful and creative title talents while accenting the decor. The furnishings illustrated... More

The Shaffer has been through many hands over just the past few decades. It's now back in family hands that had previously owned it... and they want to bring it back to its glory. So far they're doing a fine job. The lobby is filled with pictures articles about the builder, Clem "Pop" Shaffer. It is certainly a step back... More

We booked the Shaffer for our Chamber of Commerce meeting on December 3. Two and a half hours before the meeting was to take place, the proprietor sent an e-mail saying that they had decided to close the week before. We are sorry to lose this as an option for dining in the town, but remain extremely disappointed that they... More

This place is really interesting but they need to do a better job keeping it clean. We had 6 couples on a motorcycle trip here and all of us found cleanliness to be an issue with rooms at some point or another. Our bathroom was found to have old used soap in the shower, unclean toilets not to mention no... More

We were in Scenic Mountainair on business and were attracted to the Shaffer Inn and Dining Room for lunch. We were thrilled to see the interior decorations. Nothing like we've seen anywhere else before. The food was good and the waitress was friendly. My husband had the chicken fried steak, and I had the lunch special of ground beef steak... More

We stopped in a little before noon on a Sunday. Probably our 4th visit in a couple of years. Fairly newly remodeled. Historic property... fun and interesting to That having been said... remember.... It's in Mountainaire, NM. It's not the place... its the staff. Not rude.. but certainly NOT welcoming.... mostly just indifferent and really distant. We ordered coffee and... More

Let me begin by saying that staying in "historic hotels" should always be looked upon as an adventure. Some adventures are better than others though! This one was memorable, but not always for good reasons. Right away we encountered the "out of control" dog in the lobby, mentioned by a previous guest. So this was obviously not a one time... More
