Excellently positioned hotel. Lounge & bar area perfectly pleasant. Bedroom fine but bathroom a bit tired and not 100% clean. We only stayed one night and had no intention of eating at the hotel which is just as well as the restaurant was booked for a private party. They just seemed to be going through the motions. Service was OK... more

My husband and I stayed at the Hawthorne Oct 14-16, 2008 for our 1st wedding anniversary. What a terrible waste of money! The first night we stayed in the actual hotel itself. The room was soooo small, you cannot open a closet or bathroom door without it hitting something. There was barely any room to walk around. We could not... more

My father, sister and I stayed for three nights at the Hawthorne Hotel. I booked our stay after reading some of the reviews which were pretty good, and seeing pictures of the rooms from the Hawthorne website and from tourist brochures. Unfortunately our actual rooms looked nothing like the pictured rooms. I had been expecting a well appointed room with... more

I had always wanted to visit Salem because Halloween is my favorite holiday, and what better place to celebrate than Salem! I decided to spend my 40th birthday there. I arrived in town around 5pm on a Wednesday in early October. I usually plan every detail of my trips, but hadn't had time. Most places in town were booked, and... more

Overall it was a good stay. Bathroom is small, rooms were satisfactory clean, mattress needed to be updated. Central to everything, great spot. Room 325 is supposedly haunted. We stayed in 326 ... the minute we walked in we felt we were being watched, were even brushed up against. I left my camera in the room, only to find later... more

This hotel is about 4 blocks from Commuter Rail stop from Boston on foot. We chose the Bed and Breakfast package which included hot breakfast each morning at Nathaniel's. However, BF options using the BB coupons are limited to 3 choices, or any item on menu under $10. The room was clean and spacious with 2 beds and 1.5 bath;... more

Stayed here for two nights with my wife and two children (8&15) and we loved it. We booked one of the Derby rooms and were extremely impressed with the size of the room. As stated in previous reviews the bathrooms are a little on the small size. But do you really need an enormous bathroom anyway. I mean how long... more

The Hawthorne is one of the older hotels in Salem. Excellent location across from the Peabody Essex Museum, adequate free parking in the rear, interesting lobby and facade. Rooms are a bit frayed around the edges, and the bathroom is tiny, but generally clean and well maintained. Friendly staff. However, rooms that face the inner courtyard are above the kitchen... more
