The hostel is central to the beautiful town of Franz Joseph. The kitchen was massive with plenty of utensils and the resident fat ginger cat wandering around, which I loved! The hostel had a really good bar and restaurant with a great atmosphere- probably the best in town. One piece of advice would be to definitely opt for the more... More

We stumbled across this one as we got lost looking for a campsite. They were very helpful, and, due to them just finishing signing in a large group from the kiwi tours, they gave us a very quiet room (upgrading us for free) to make sure we weren't disturbed too much. The facilities were good (only gripe was that there... More

We spent a night in The Rainforest Retreat and it was awesome! The staff were friendly from the start, asking what our plans were and if we needed help getting around. The rooms were spotless and cosy. The room we had was sensational value for money with plenty of heat on a canny chilly night! After a long day of... More

The retreat is not the luxury rainforest retreat as advertised, however is still nice. Lots of young people around who were a bit noisy so not really the romantic retreat its made out to be (unless you are under 30). We did however think the accommodation was good and the tree house we stayed in was a nice log cabin... More

This place is so well set up its hard to believe you are camping - or in our case camper-vanning! Totally organised, awesome bar and restaurant with a great atmosphere, fabulous food and excellent shower and toilet facilities that are heated (did I mention they are heated!?) The only problem with this place is that the rest become soooooo disappointing!

Stayed for four nights here while visiting beautiful Franz Josef. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Prices were reasonable for bag packers and the cabins were nice and roomy. Kitchens were cleaned every morning and they have a cosy TV lounge to relax and chill. Plus they've got a free sauna/hot pool for cold travellers to escape the winter... More

Unfortunately the other negative reviews left here regarding the bad service are accurate. I agree that on first impressions, the owner was extremely welcoming and friendly. I did have a problem with the heating as well but found the receptionist lady very helpful. She sorted the problem immediately with a replacement heater. The major problems with service, I found, were... More

I spent 1 night and got an upgrade to one of the cabins at the back of the retreat, very nice room with coffee making facilities, mini fridge and King size bed!!!. The receptionist was always very friendly and willing to help. I had dinner at the restaurant that night, food was very nice and pleasant and great service, I... More

Great staff, great food, great room! The staff were very helpful with lots of last minute changes and when I got there they upgraded us for free as I had stayed there a few times before. The pizza was fantastic and we had an amazing time. Would recommend to anyone!

At first rainforest retreat seems like a very pleasant and welcoming place to stay, with nice looking chalets, a pub/restaurant on site and a hot tub.. All these things are brilliant, but it comes at quite a price. Terrible service from most staff, with arrogant and sarcastic remarks being their first language. On immediate arrival what appeared to be the... More
