Great place to stay, the atmosphere in the rooms/huts etc is fantastic, really felt like I was in the middle of a rainforest, food is great, staff are helpful & friendly. Will be staying again & would recommend this accomadation. We had a great thunder storm whilst staying here which I love!!!

This place was epic. The staff were so welcoming on arrival which was such a great start to a wonderful stay. It is located 1 minutes walking distance to the "main strip" of town. The bar and restaurant was probably the most popular place in town and didn't create any sleeping interference. Very much recommended.

Huge holidy park, with lots of facilities, even a bar! We parked our campervan there and stayed two nights. The showers and toilets were average: one toilet was clogged plus the showerss lights kept switching off (they have an automatic system), but the water was nice and warm. A negative aspect was the lack of free wifi, you had to... More

Room was mouldy, damp and smelt like poo. Shower only had cold water, toilet leaked and smelt bad, three beds were crammed in to such tiny space that you could roll on each other's bed! Heater didn't work and it was snowing outside! Food in restaurant was cold! Worst than any hostel! Do not stay for your health

My husband and I had a fantastic stay at the rainforest retreat hotel. We stayed in a Gecko village hut which had everything we required for our stay. The huts are very well equipped with a small kitchen area (sink, microwave, kettle) really comfortable bed, lovely seating area with flat screen tv, and lovely clean bathrooms. The only negative is if... More

I traveled solo and stayed in the Motel room. It has a Queen size bed, heater, kettle and fridge. They do have room service everyday - beds were made, bins emptied and toilet cleaned. It was NZD85/night and worth every dollar. Lovely cute ginger cat in the kitchen. The only gripe is the lack of free wifi... Oh and for... More

We stayed in a tree hut - private and self contained. The room had everything we needed and was very comfortable. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. The restaurant had a good vibe - was jumping for a mid-week night! The food was good, and the young English waitress is an asset - very pleasant manner. Overall a... More

We stayed a couple of nights. The receptionists were helpful and gave us some good practical advice. We had a room on the first floor with a kitchenette. The guests were basically all 18/25 year olds. Not for plus 30's !!!If you are in Franz Josef - spend a little more and be more comfortable - sorry this "Retreat"was not for... More

Stayed for a few nights at the Rainforest Retreat which were lovely. The restaurant on site had a delicious menu on offer with a great atmosphere, our waitress was very alert, extremely friendly and informative. The receptionist, Georgia was just excellent! She was professional plus knew how to have a good joke around. The only down side to out stay... More

Not a bad hostel. Got most of the basic requirements but caters to contiki and group bookings of 18/25 year olds. Looks like it was once a decent place but has switched to the budget end. Dorms are basic, beds creaky and not that great. Blocked sinks in the large mixed bathrooms/ showers. Much better hostel about 40m down the... More
