Two nights in this Franz Josef hostel and not a complaint to write about. Clean, hospitable, close to town, with all the facilities you could want- free wifi, laundry, sauna, etc. A nice stop along the West Coast. And a 1-2 hr hike to the glacier! Perfect.

Hostel is ok but you can have nicer ones around. Kitchen is clean, dorms are ok but cold in winter. Sauna is great even though its usually full. TV room is nice. We tried different board games but non was complete. All in all it could be warmer if the temperatures are down. If bad weather you will be board... More

Rooms are very Spartan, as are the beds. Our room was a long walk from any of the facilities and reception, and there were very few bathrooms for the number of guests. The kitchen was huge and well equipped, but was generally very busy. We stayed at another hotel last time in Franz Josef and it was cheaper and much... More

Really regret that I have booked a room in this hostel. The twin room for 100 bucks a night hasn't even got a table or a wardrobe, nothing. Everything is on the floor. Just arrived and really want to have a shower, but the hot water is all used up, guy at the reception told me that I have to... More

A large, centrally located hostel in Franz Joseph, this is a well equipped and clean hostel. Whilst the hostel can clearly cater for large numbers you never fell cramped in. As you move around NZ and utilise hostels, cleanness becomes a benchmark and the fact that this hostel has a cleaning regime of the kitchen and other common areas several... More

When I checked into the hostel, there was 3 members of staff at reception and they seemed more interested in talking among themselves then dealing with me. The only time I found them helpful was when I was enquiring about the Heli-hike and I was informed that 'it is better for us if you book it through us'. Also a... More

Hi Clare, Thank you for review. I apologize for your experience with staff at YHA Franz Josef, this behaviour is unacceptable and all staff have been spoken to about their conduct while on reception. I have investigated your experience of a male staff member entering a female dorm unannounced and have reminded all cleaning staff of the correct procedure when... More

Don't let old notions of hosteling put you off! Throughout New Zealand they were very reasonable (@$60-70US) double rooms with PRIVATE bath, some with tv, excellent locations in center of towns, walking distances to grocery stores, large, friendly communal kitchens. Most important: the nationwide bus system stopped DIRECTLY in front of all accommodations-and picked up from same! Highly recommended without... More

Our second stay after staying here several years ago, and still impressed with the quality of the hostel. Double room is small but functional, bathroom facilities great, large kitchen and huge communal area. Close enough into town for easy access to everything.
