Granted, the main area in Franz Josef is TINY but great location, nonetheless. Near the petrol station and close enough to everything but far enough for it to be nice and quiet. Staff was also friendly and very accommodating in terms of extending your stay (especially important in winter where the roads are sometimes closed on short notice, etc). Being... More

Stayed here 2 nights over New Years and had a great time. We stayed in a private ensuite double room which was nice and comfortable and the staff were very helpful. Didn't use the kitchen facilities as was walking distance to everything in town and had THE BEST food in our entire NZ trip in Alice May's which I cannot... More

Don't get me wrong, the bedroom and manchester was perfect and the bathroom superb . . . but the kitchen is absolutely superb but had both microwaves broken (clearly for some time) and the kitchen was unusually dirty - although, this is more a reflection of the people staying, rather than the hostel. The free 6pm soup is an unexpected... More

The staff who worked this YHA were wonderful and very helpful during my stay. I shared a 5 bed dorm room with a couple of other girls which was fine, and luckily our room had a dehumidifier otherwise, much like the rest of the hostel, our room would have been quite damp. The bathrooms were kept neat and tidy and... More

We stayed two nights here in a private room. The room and shared bathroom were clean. The room was pretty tiny (a bit bigger than the bed!) and a little musty, so we kept the window open much of the time. The kitchen was the cleanest and best equipped we found during our time in NZ backpackers - lots of... More

We stayed for for 2 nights. Our room was clean and fairly comfy but cold and took hours to warm up after we put the heating on. The kitchen was filthy, with dirty dishes and cooking equipment left everywhere. Everything also seem to be broken - the things we spotted included the sauna, 1 of 2 washing machines, 2 of... More

Kia Ora Dandcruz, I’m sorry to hear your stay with us was less than perfect. During the time of your stay we had a number of refurbishments underway, which meant some of our facilities were out of action. We have now completed painting our kitchen with a tougher, easy to wash paint that took three days to dry. This is... More

Stayed here for couple of days in June 2014, one of the best hostel we've stayed in. Hostel was very clean and pristine. Good cleanliness overall, from the room, communal bathroom, kitchen to the communal living room. Staff was ever so polite and very helpful, could not fault them. Too bad we could not do the Helicopter ride to see... More

I stayed in this hostel two nights and loved it! It's very clean and cozy, the kitchen is big and the common room has a fireplace, a piano and a pool table! The bathrooms were extremely clean, as was our nice four bed dorm. The day I checked in they had a movie night with pop corns, and they also... More

Kia ora Marta, Thanks for the great feedback! We work hard to give our guests the best possible experience, so it’s always nice to hear that our hard work pays off. I’m glad you liked the free hot soup. During the chilly winter months we offer guests vegetable or chilli bean soup. And because our movie night is so popular,... More

Have stayed in tons of hostels throughout Australia and NZ, and this was one of my favourites! I chose to stay here when on kiwi experience rather than their prebooked accommodation due to it being about $10 cheaper! They offer free soup in the evenings, and the kitchen was large and clean. Lovely communal area with open fire and sofas,... More

When I booked this place I wasn't aware it was a backpackers with commune living. That's entirely my own fault. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room appeared to be clean. Not my idea of good accommodation.

Kia Ora Mark, Yep, we’re definitely a backpacker hostel with great communal spaces including a lounge with fireplace and pool table, fully-equipped kitchen and a free sauna! I hope you enjoyed your stay despite the fact that you usually don’t stay in backpackers. And thanks for leaving the positive feedback about our friendly staff and clean rooms. Kind regards, Luke...
