We arrived after a 5 hour trip with our 5 year old son who had gotten car sick along the way at the Scenic hotel in FJ. Needless to say we were tired and a bit grumpy, when the hostess said M'am we would like to upgrade you to our sister resort. After getting over the too good to be... More

There are many good hotels in Franz Joseph and Te Waoni is certaily one of them. Having said that, it is not a great hotel and the service was not up to what one would expect for the price. The tasting dinner included with our stay was just so-so, and the front desk staff messed up our excursion reservations. They... More

Dear Joe Accepting blame for your river rafting activity cancelled owing to river flooding 6 months ago is not a "pot shot" I will take on the nose ... At the time we assisted you with booking alternative activities as the last thing any of us at Te Waonui wanted was for you to spend the majority of your 2... More

We absolutely loved our stay of four days at Te Waonui Forest Retreat ! It is definitely by far the best place to stay in Franz Josef. Richard , the General Manager , is outstanding - he is there to greet every guest personally and his attention to every request is simply amazing. His staff follow his lead and were... More

On a tour and only one night here but it was the most beautiful place. Setting - incredible. Room - fantastic - bed heavenly, wonderful shower, heated bathroom floor, decking amongst the ferns. Staff wonderful - attentive, helpful. Food - amazing! Want to go back and just stay there for a few days.

Dear Cheryl Thank you for your review and for sharing your experience at Te Waonui Forest Retreat with others. We are still a relatively new entrant in the Luxury Hotel Market but we understand the power of word-of-mouth recommendations after excellent service delivery so thank you for assisting in this regard! Arrived in Franz Josef during a freak storm with winds railing at 300 klm an hour, the highway from Haas to Fox Glacier had been closed several times due to both, electric wires and poles down along the highway, and uprooted trees all over the place. many tourists had to sleep in cars if they didn't make it to either... We enjoyed staying here for 2 nights - really great modern hotel with nice facilities and a comfortable bed. There is a glass door that opens out to a patio facing the rain forest courtyard. Service was good. The location is convenient to the next door Glacier Pools and the rest of the town. We had a great dinner in... More

We found Te Waouni after our original hotel had no power, heat or food when we arrived. We were thrilled to find Te Waouni and their very friendly and welcoming staff. The room was nicely appointed and had free wifi, which was a welcome surprise. We were only there one night but really enjoyed it. Dinner and breakfast were good.

Apart from a handful of small settlements the 5 hour drive from Nelson to Franz Josef is one of solitude and breathtaking landscapes. There are very few cars on the road and even the omnipresent farmland of NZ recedes into virginal native forest and the rolling surf of the West Coast. Te Waonui Forest Retreat is set at the base... The hotel is well situated on the edge of the rain forest in close proximity to the glacier. The management and staff did everything to make us feel welcome.
