This is an ideally located, good value for money motel. Excellent, undercover parking at the door of each unit. Plenty of space, spotlessly clean, good kitchenette and bathroom. Also just far away from the Main Street (read tourist buses!) and heli-pads to be comfortable. Owner operators are lovely people quick to help, give good tourist advice, etc. Would not hesitate... Managers Mike and Heather treated us more like friends than clients. Travel instructions and restaurant recommendations were excellent. After a problem with our rental car, they were very supportive and helped us straighten out related problems. Mike even offered to drive us to local attractions because our car was inoperable. We were consumed with rearranging the rest of the trip,... More

My wife and I spent two nights here during our three week trip through New Zealand. We were completely satisfied with Lake Matheson Motel and Mike, the innkeeper. The room was clean, quiet and very comfortable. Mike was very helpful in giving us info on places to go and things to do. An added plus was that it is situated... More

This was the 3rd time (Oct1998, Sep2011, and now Sep2014) we were here and it's still wonderful. We also brought another 2 couples as we know the Lake Matherson Motel will deliver. Rooms were still excellent in all ways and our friends loved it. The hosts Mike and Heather Reilly were so friendly and helpful. We chat with them for... More

Fox Glacier is in my opinion to be preferred to Franz Josef. The resort is more quiet, and the glacier is much more accessible. Lake Matheson is also much closer. The Lake Matheson Motel is a perfect base if you want a little bit of luxury, but away from the hotels. We booked a King Bed Studio, and it was... More

Having arrived in fox glacier without pre booking a motel, we turned up here and were greeted very warmly by mike. We decided to stay the night and were very happy with the room price and everything else. That happy that we ended up staying another night! Highly recommend to all!

Reviews in Lonely Planet for this property is all true about the room but for a hotel that is number 1 in Fox Glacier, we had two bad experiences 1) In our trip of 10 days and some 8 hotels, this is the only hotel to ask for payment upfront and not at check-out. Well, not such a major problem... More

What a lovely place to spend two nights in Fox Glacier. I'm giving it 5 star due to the very pleasant people looking after the place, the rooms were really clean and sizeable for a family of four. The grounds on site are clearly looked after very well by the owners and this is something we are finding a fantastic... More

We choose this place because of its recommendation in the Lonely Planet and I just can agree to them: For the fair price you pay, you get some very good quality rooms...much better than normal New Zealand Motel style.
