We loved our stay in Murchison--and Murchison Lodge was the perfect place to stop on the long drive south to the West Coast. The house was so cozy with a lovely lounge area and a very nice room--the hosts even left us cookies and homemade liquor to try which was a nice treat. Loved that our room had a private... More

Yes, although we are a good stop over point, our area is becoming popular as a destination in itself as there is plenty to do. Rafting, fishing, biking, walking - and of course the popular 'Natural Flames Experience'. Thanks for your review. More

For travellers to New Zealand it can be difficult to choose which of the many spectacular places to visit. If you are travelling around the South Island, one splendid spot to stop is the Murchison Lodge. Hosts Shirley and Merve take extraordinary steps to make your stay comfortable. It was quite fortuitous that we happened to find ourselves in Murchison.... More

Wow Nix-on-the-road! Thanks for the time and effort you have spent reviewing the lodge. It's true that there are so many places that are amazing in New Zealand it can be hard to choose. But like you found - the smaller ones have no crowds and are still 'unspoilt'. And yes - our population is 502 - very well guessed!... More

We have just spent three nights here in the Riverview Room with a view towards the Buller River. It was spotlessly clean and we loved the mosaics in the bathroom. Shirley and Merve are great hosts and Kali the dog is gorgeous! Breakfasts with Shirley's preserves and home made bread are followed by home grown bacon and eggs cooked by... More

Thanks Ghosts - lovely to have you both stay here. Well done on doing so well on the Flames walk even though you were wearing gum boots which are a bit awkward if you are not used to them. You are right - although we recommend 'sturdy' shoes we should point out they should have some grip also! I'm afraid... More

How wonderful to find a cup of tea waiting and a roaring log fire in a beautiful lounge. The wooden furniture was truly superb, the evening meal delicious, as were the canapes. Breakfast from the BBQ was followed by a guided walk by Shirley to the natural flames where we had pancakes and honey. A really fantastic experience. Thank you... More

Thanks for the review Simon. The thing about colder days is that we can have the fire going which makes it so cosy. Good luck with your sailing adventures! More

We stayed here on our way up to Kaiteriteri and felt we had lucked into the perfect place. Merve and Shirley are the owners of this beautiful bed and breakfast. They are so friendly and welcoming, drinks and cookies with them on the deck upon our arrival, very nice! We stayed in the Riverside room, which was probably the master... More

Thanks for such a great review. We have a lot to live up to now; we always try to exceed expectations but with reviews like these, it pushes the bar ever higher!! Oh well - we've always tried to do our best for guests - we will continue to do so… And the 'Natural Flames' are still burning - book... More

When you are crossing the South Island from west to east (as we did) or from east to west don't miss a stop-over in Murchison Lodge. We enjoyed a relaxing and peaceful accomodation, lovely hosts and a great breakfast. Although we had initially only planned an overnight stay, Shirley and Merve convinced us to "have a look" at the "natural... More

We had our very first sighting of an elf yesterday!! A gentleman who came up with us works as a 'Santa's Helper' at Xmas - one of his elves. He was quite small in stature - and had a huge smile! Although we could not quite get him to sit on one of the mushrooms for a photo, it was... More

Made a last minute reservation here to break up our drive from The west coast of South Island to Abel Tasman park. What a gem, clean and up to date. Warm and inviting. We opted to have dinner there and it was also good. Highly recommend it. Wish we had time to stay an additional night.

We are well positioned to have a break on a long drive so we welcome tired drivers a lot! Many people tell us they wish they had stayed here two nights but they didn't realise Murchison had so much to offer. A newly enlivened promotions group in the town hopes to rectify that. but meanwhile, if you are into the... More

Thanks David. Riverside is used a lot for a total 're-pack' sometimes as it has so much floor space to spread everything out on! Happy you enjoyed your stay here. You are right - there are lots of things to do to keep you busy if you want to - or it is a great place to stay and do... More

We wanted to take the Lewis Pass route to Blenheim as we had not driven that one then needed to find somewhere to stay in an area where habitations are few and far between. We were not disappointed. I can confirm the honesty bar was well used - am having to get emergency supplies up from Whisky Galore in Christchurch! Well, what does one expect from a couple of Scots and fellow guests who have a common interest in the aqua vitae?! Glad I went to bed! More

Just a bed & breakfast really, some way out of the town centre. The river view room was large, but the river view non existent as the river is 200m away. The lounge was ours for the night but there was no TV either in the lounge or in our room. My wife missed the large step in the bathroom... More

We are puzzled as to what has happened in the three months since your very positive comments in our visitors book - so I am not quite sure how to respond! Views are subjective of course but most guests love the views over the river to the mountains. (To reassure others, I have just checked and the river is still... More
