Merve and Shirley are fantastic hosts, and have a lovely lodge. We stayed just one night and could have easily stayed for longer. We had the Tui Room, which is on the ground floor. It is a good size, with an en-suite shower-room and a decked area just outside. Shower gel, shampoo and soaps were all provided, as well as... More

It was a delight to host you both, even though you were only here for one night. One of the downsides of the lodge is just as you get to know someone they leave again!! The trip to the flames was on what proved to be the hottest day of the year, but the cool stream gullies were a delight... More

The books on the coffee table in the lounge are there for you to share in the history of Murchison. Help yourself a cup of tea and a book but give the 3 types of biscuits a miss because it will soon be time for appetizers then dinner followed by the homemade plum brandy, 5 months in the making. Thanks... More

It's an unusual pastime, taking photos of woodpiles but it's interesting to share one's delight! We do have some more normal interests forunately… Thanks for reviewing us M.E.W. More

It was just a stop over for us, we only stayed 1 night at Murchison, however, this might be one of the most cozy and comfortable place that we experienced in NZ. Love the dog Kelly who is a great walking companion, also love the Gin that Merve and Shirley provided, especially for a chill night. Great breakie but unfortunately... More

A lovely bed and breakfast, super clean and comfortable. Lovely rooms, beautifully appointed. Welcoming tea and biscuits on arrival. Damson liqueur (or similar) set out for post-dinner chats with other guests. Plentiful, satisfying breakfast. Lovely setting and views. Highly recommended.

New brew of damson gin has just put down for the winter. We raised a few eyebrows at the bottle store walking out with so many bottles! Thanks for the review amiga… More

This was our first ever stay in a B&B and we were very happy. The hosts Merve & Shirley were friendly and helped with suggestions on locations to see in the area and beyond. We had Dinner as well as breakfast & both meals were great. We were the only guests, at the end of the summer season so were... More

Glad your first stay in a B&B was a positive experience! Nice to have met you and yes, Murchison is not only an ideal stop over but we like to think that it's worth exploring the area for a couple of days also. Thanks for the review... More

We only spent one night in Murchison Lodge, but wished it could have been longer. An unusual and intriguing property, hidden down a small road. We were greeted with tea and biscuits, the log fire was burning,(it was raining), and it seemed like home from home. The sitting area in the centre of the property was comfortable and spacious, and... More

Yes Murchison isn't on people's radar much - until they get here and find it's a hidden gem! Although the summer has been great - it's always nice to sit in front of a cosy fire! Thanks for the review. More

If, like us, you are traveling from the South Island to the North, by road, there are times when you say, "I wish we could find a nice place to stop and rest". Tucked away down a side street off the main road through Murchison is just such a haven of peace and relaxation. We had been on the road... More

This is a delightful bed and breakfast with very comfortable rooms, great hosts and terrific food. Definitely ask to have dinner there -- there isn't a better place in Murchison, and we loved the meal and the time with the other guests. The hosts offer bottles of wine at close to grocery store prices, as well as after dinner drinks... More

Thanks for your review Maude. Yes, we have the alcohol here for 'emergencies' so that guests don't have to bother go out to have a wine with dinner. Seems to work well - no one has taken advantage of the 'tab' system (as far as we know!) And yes, there is plenty to do here if you are into getting... More

We arrived here earlier than expected from Greymouth station, where we'd arrived on the KiwiRail TransAlpine railway. Shirley and Merve were very welcoming and were happy to recommend things to do and routes to take on our onward journey. It felt almost like being at home in a beautiful part of rural NZ. We chose to eat in, a meal... More

Glad you felt at home here at the lodge and that you enjoyed the company of the other guests. That of course is something that we cannot control except by only having nice people to stay!! Would recommend Murchison Lodge - on arrival we were met by Shirley. She made us tea and sat down to chat and with the help of a few maps etc. showed us places of interest. Thanks so much for the review Liz and so pleased that you enjoyed your stay here. We are very happy to tell guests about the great things to do around Murchison and the surrounding area. As we have both been tour guides in previous 'incarnations' we can often advise on the best walks to do around the South Island after... More
