The Lazy Cow offers a range of type of accommodation - multi-occupancy backpackers to en-suite. We booked at a few hours notice, which was crazy on a holiday weekend, but we got lucky! We took the en-suite. There was an incredibly warm 'can-do' welcome by Hayley, the manager (owners' daughter) for whom nothing was too much trouble - she even... More

We tramped for four days and decided to hike out 20kms on our last day. We were exhausted and drove for ages! We stumbled on The Lazy Cow and were welcomed with open arms (and carrot cake!) by Hayley!

We have stayed in many backpackers and this one was by far the best. We always stay in en suite rooms but this one did not have one available. On arrival though this was not a problem as our room was right next to the bathroom which was immaculately clean and not shared with many others. The daughter of the... More

Staying at the Lazy Cow rather happened as a necessity on the long drive from Nelson to Karamea, and as we had a few days in our schedule before starting to walk the Heaphy Track, we decided to stay one night in the Cow and were quite pleased with what we found! It turned out to be a super-tidy, cosy... More

We were just passing through for a night but had a great time. It may be partly because there were only 5 of us there, but the place was just lovely and homely, comfy cooking, dining and living areas, with a great selection of DVDs, games and jigsaws for the lazy evenings. Owners are very chilled out and approachable. V... More

I have stayed in lots of hostels in New Zealand and this is by far the most welcoming i have visited. The weather wasn't great but the fire was roaring and i was made to feel at home straight away. Its super clean and tidy and it is very hard to leave! I was lucky enough to try the new... More

Arrived to a comfy sitting room with squishy sofas and hundreds of dvds. Comfy beds, free homemade cupcakes, lovely jacuzzi bath and really friendly owners - perfect stay . the cow theme is humorous, with plenty of quirky things to keep you amused.

Beautiful, friendly, clean, bright, warm. The owners are very friendly, she is an amaaazing cook. They actually have a little restaurant next to the hostel with a delicious menu that they change every month I think. Also they bake muffins and cakes all the time, first piece is free! They have a lot of puzzles and games, dvds, book exchange,... More
