If you are coming to Whakapapa to explore Tongariro (and why else would you come to Whakapapa?!), the Skotel provides a wonderful base camp. The rooms are nothing spectacular, but they deliver what you need (at a good value): a comfortable place to wash up and rest your weary bones after an amazing day spent shredding the Whakapapa ski field... Nice warm room, bit smaller than expected compared to the photos but fine if you are mostly out in the snow. Decent bathroom, communal kitchen tidy and well equipped. Lovely sheets but bedspreads seem quite old.

1. had blood marks on my sons bedsheet (i guess it was someones had a leak and its not changed) yak!! 2. you can hear people next door even if they are not loud so not good for honey mooners or romantic couples! as there is a door locked in the middle which connects to other room. 3. below average... We stayed in the family cabins and they surfed all purposes, clean and comfortable with self catering - all you need. We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner and the food were very well prepared and fresh. We were a group of 8 people, and we were all in agreement that the dinner meals were great, and well... More

For the price the backpacker room accommodation was excellent, bathrooms modern and clean. Service was excellent, location couldn't be better. However, don't be tempted to eat in their restaurant due to convenience! - very poor quality food.

Excellent place to stay if you intend to go up the ski field a few times in the duration of your stay. We stayed at the backpackers room with our baby and we were very pleased with the access of the guest lounge. Although the kitchen facilities were not up to standard (the microwave specifically), it didnt dampen the mood... More

This is in the perfect spot for both winter skiing and summer tramps. While it is a little tired it is warm and comfortable and has all you need. Fridge tea and coffee making facilities in rooms. We have stayed here 3 times now and staff have been consistently friendly and helpful. Not necessarily accurate with mountain information though. They... More

A wonderful warm welcome. The Skotel is a lovely hotel ideally situated for those who like to enjoy the snow. The hotel doesn’t look much from the outside but once inside you are greeted by lots of natural wood with a real alpine feel. The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. We had a superior room which was totally... More

Four of us were staying in the area and decided to try the Skotel Terrace Restaurant for dinner on Monday. We arrived to find the restaurant at capacity - which we took as a good sign that the restaurant was a popular choice. We did later find out that it was a tour group that had packed the place out.... The beds are riddled with stains and bed bugs. After leaving the hotel i broke out in a rash all over my hands and back so that was fun. Was told that we could use the shared kitchen to cook our lunch. Upon requesting on where it was, we were told by the staff that we were not allowed to... More
