The minute you walk into the hotel you know you’re somewhere special. The large lounge area is plush with history and old world decadence. The rooms although comfortable are in need of renovation. Parts of the hotel have been newly renovated, but not ours. Great value though as we only paid $160 for the night, so can’t complain. We were... More

We've just had a spectacular week of skiing at Whakapapa and Turoa (both ski fields on the majestic Mt Ruapehu) all of which was wrapped up a brilliant package of experience as we stayed at Bayview Chateau Tongariro. The Chateau is only a 10 minute drive up the mountain to the nearest ski field Whakapapa. The Chateau has recently refurbished... More

Shame on Bayview not to make good use of such a beautiful heritage hotel. The hotel is iconic and the new extension was well done. However, the rooms are in absolute desperate need of maintenance or even better a complete overhaul. We stayed in the family room in the original wing. The room had a double bed and two single... We stayed at the Chateau last weekend with a large group as part of a work social function. The check in process was extreemly smooth and the staff were wonderful to deal with. Our room was a suite on the 3rd floor - lovely.... even had its own fireplace - not that we attempted to use it because the hotel... More

We booked the celebration package which included a bottle of quality cava and a small box of handmade chocolates in the room. Also included was dinner for 2 and full buffet breakfast. The room was very well appointed and I would say refurbished in the last year or so. Dinner was superb with an excellent selection. Especially impressive was the... More

This was our first visit here in over 5 years and the Chateau is still as grand as ever! We stayed in the old wing but it has been well maintained since our last visit. The rooms are decorated in an "olde worlde" style in keeping with the style and age of the Chateau. The room we had was of... More

It is always a pleasure to have return guests. I am delighted that you found the Chateau to be as you had remembered albeit with some subtle chnages since your previous visit 5 years ago. The Hotel does try hard top maintain the historic intergrity that the Chateau is known for and the the little touches like the pianist in... More

we recently took a small group (12) for two nights and three days up to stay at Chateau Tongariro just before the start of the ski season (our group was mostly seniors with lots of memories of years past at this resort) One lady remembers it opening and the excitement for all her young friends.back in the 1930's. What a fantastic looking hotel, reminiscent of the grand European hotels. Prices to match, I might add. There are two parts to the hotel; the old wing and the new. I've stayed in each and each have their pros and cons. In the old wing the rooms are tired: in ours the shower was weak, the short curtain too short... More

We stayed in one of their villas. Hmm, we have kids and apparently they are not welcome in the main building. The unit was dirty, the flooring was coming up causing a pretty dangerous hazard. Fully half the heaters didn't work and the master bed was a tiny double - who has a double anymore? The tv had an unimpressive... More

Our bookings were done on-line & confirmation was prompt and efficient. Pity the hotel staff didn't follow through with the same efficiency. I guess what was annoying, was the fact that we'd asked for a room with views. We were in two rooms at the back of the hotel and looked into manuka bushes. Mountain view's "nil". Then upon arriving... More
