The house is alright. It's nothing special but clean and somewhat comfortable. Not really any desk or much sitting room to speak of in the room. The man running it was kind even though he was a little awkward. He made sure to have a great breakfast every morning at 8 for us and would try to chat with us... More

New Bedford is an odd town. We were here for a wedding in nearby Dartmouth and made the trip into a Melville pilgrimage. We got here from the Berkshires where we'd visited Arrowhead the place HM wrote Moby Dick. New Bedford is spooky, run down and ultimately fascinating. The old whaling captain's houses of which this is one are quirky,... More

My wife and I have stayed several times in the Douglass room, a perfect accommodation in every detail. Ron and Stan are wonderful hosts, kind, friendly and attentive. Breakfast is incredible, prepared with the best local fresh organic ingredients. Their B&B has obviously been decorated with great care to preserve the historical elegance while providing every comfort. They are also... More

The Melville House is located in a quiet corner of New Bedford, but still in walking distance from nice bars and restaurants such as Freestones. The rooms are beautiful and spacious but be aware that in early spring there're not really anywhere to stay except in your room since the patio is closed. And then there's the breakfast. This is... My boyfriend and I stayed here August 2011 for one night to attend a wedding near New Bedford. I describe it as awkward because when we arrived at our predetermined time, we rang the bell and no one answered. We called the number for the b&b as we stood at the door and we were told Stan would be sent... More

I recently enjoyed a stay at the Melville House B&B. The owner was accommodating knowing my late arrival. I stayed in the Douglas room. A comfortable and spacious room. The touch of a homemade chocolate chip cookie is one of the small things that set this B&B out from others. A great part of the stay is breakfast. As a... More

We visited New Bedford on a drive back from Northeastern Massachusetts and came across the Melville House B&B as a place to stay for the night. We stayed in the "Frederick Douglass" room. Our mattress was a bit hard for our tastes. We also found that there weren't as many common sitting areas as we have seen in other B&B's.... More

Upon arrival, our stay did not bode well. The outside of the house needed paint and spruced up. The lawn needed cut, and in the back, laundry – including men’s large underwear – hung on the line. We had booked the Garden Room Efficiency Apartment, located in the basement of the home. As soon as Ron opened the door to... More

The Melville House is lovely, and if you are interested in Herman Melville, don't miss it! My husband and I stayed in the Melville Room, and we weren't disappointed. It was decorated in beautiful blue shades of the sea with hand painted stenciling at the tops of all of the walls. The room was spacious and held a Victorian sofa... More

Proprietor Ron Mack and his partner Stan Paltz do everything to make a person's stay relaxing, comforting, serene, and exciting. The house has three guestrooms: the luxurious Garden Room, with private bath and private entrance, and the more modest but nonetheless pleasing Frederick Douglass Room and Herman Melville Room. From the moment after a very friendly check-in, Ron is serving... More
