A small and comfortable place to stay. Some rooms with shared baths. Small simple rooms. But clean. Staff we're very helpful and courteous. Do it yourself breakfast was nice. A bit more and better than your basic hotel continental breakfast

Thank you for your kind review. Due to more harsh criticism (see other reviews here), we are planning more improvements in several areas and hope to be an even better value for you. We hope to see you again when your travels bring you back to Cambridge! More

We really wanted to like this “boutique” hotel. We were coming to Harvard University for a conference and chose to stay at the Irving House for three nights because of its proximity to Gund Hall and the reviews on Tripadvisor. Yes, it is close to Harvard Yard and it was convenient, but our overall experience was less than wonderful. Irving... More

Dear 'Rocky’s Friend,' Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. With the long and specific list of issues you raise, we have a great deal to work on! First, we do not consider ourselves a ‘Boutique Hotel’ never did and probably never will. Irving House is, indeed, a house converted from a two family residence to a... More

My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Irving House in mid-October, 2014. It was a dual purpose visit. We attended a Fleetwood Mac concert at the Garden in Boston on a Friday night, so we needed someplace to spend the night that allowed easy access to public transportation. Also, since I grew up near Harvard Square in Cambridge,... More

Thank you for writing a very thorough and thoughtful review! The details you provided will be very helpful for guests. Some of them are, as you note, conditions we cannot change, and some we can. The parking and, unfortunately with current technology, the heating and cooling controls, we cannot change. The carpet tiles, while not the most elegant solution to... More

Dank, musty, and not very clean. Expensive and any or all concerns raised are ignored. Go to a best western. At least you know what you are getting. Food was poor and we left to go find a coffee shop as soon as we could. Staff clearly are not allowed much decision making as each concern was met with "we... More

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. I am sorry that you found our guesthouse not to your liking. Your comments are surprising because we have not had any guest consider the house unclean. In fact, the comments from guests generally comment on how clean they have found us. This is also true of the... More

Irving House is the best choice for sightseeing to Harvard or visiting your child studying at Harvard. You can feel yourself at the Harvard University, because it is next to the buildings of the University. It is a very clean and well decorated hotel. If you are a person from one of the Mediterenian Countries you will also like its... More

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay! We are very pleased you consider us a great choice for visits to Harvard University. The house has long established ties with Harvard, from its days as a dormitory for Harvard students back in the 1920s and 30s, to its current incarnation as a guesthouse serving a wider variety of... I was very impressed with how clean our full bath room was and how comfortable the beds were. We had a queen size bed and a bunk bed which was comfortable as well. Great tea time and breakfast food every day.

First impressions not brilliant, general feeling of so so, from presentation to reception. When we arrived, at advertised check in time, evidence of cleaning equipment on all floors, including bags of garbage, not very professional looking. Our room was up three flights of stairs, carpet in common areas very worn. Room not bad, private bathroom while clean, very outdated. Self... More

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I wish we could be more impressive to more people. This is especially true in our neighborhood of Harvard Square where hotel rates are significantly higher than other cities. Our rates are a relative bargain, and mores when breakfast, wifi and parking are included. The condition of our hall carpets has been noted by... More

I stayed at the B&B for four nights, and was very happy with my everything. My single room was small but immaculately clean, and the communal bathrooms were kept spotless throughout the day. The place has great character, and things such as free books in the room, pastries with afternoon coffee, and healthy breakfast options really made it stand out... More

This B & B was incredibly convenient for Harvard and Cambridge. First impressions were not so good as our room was at the top of three flights of stairs and was smaller than we imagined. However, the friendliness of the staff and overall atmosphere soon won us over. The breakfast was excellent, so special compliments to the breakfast team who... More

Thank you for your kind and helpful review! Yes, all these things are true: some of our top (fourth) floor rooms are small and they are a walk up, as we cannot find a place in the house to install an elevator….We hope you enjoyed the quiet to be had up there-- I will share your comments with our staff... This overpriced B&B (about $300/night with tax) illustrates the ridiculous hotel market in Cambridge. The room temperatures are controlled centrally, and for unknown reasons management keeps the A/C set at 68 F. In other words, the rooms are freezing from cold drafts that you can't stop. When I requested a warmer temperature, staff on duty said "you're talking to the... More

Thank you for providing your comments on your stay with us. While the rates at this time of year are high in Harvard Square, ours are among the lowest in this area. With the inclusion of parking and breakfast, they compare very favorably with our colleagues. So, your characterization for the budget-minded is accurate. However, we do aim to be... More
