We loved this charming historically recognized gem! It was an amazing bargain, charming and the staff was so hospitable. This is not a luxury hotel, or a cookie cutter like a few in town, it is old and charming. It amazes me how so many people don't compare apples to apples when they review. Obviously this is not a 5... More

We only had one night at the Van Gilder but it would be a great place to base yourself in Seward. Located in the older, centre of town, it is walking distance to several restaurants and the waterfront. It is an old hotel, with a great deal of character, but also with the quirks that come with older properties. The... More

We chose this hotel because of previous good reviews on Tripadvisor, but we did not find this a pleasant place to stay. Just about any place in Seward would be a better choice than the Van Gilder Hotel on Adams Street. This is not a unique, quaint, historic hotel. It was originally built as an apartment building and it is... More

The hotel is old, which on the one hand makes it charming, but on the other hand makes it barely adequate. The room we stayed was small, uncomfortable and smelled of strong deodorant. The service was good as the young gentleman in the front desk, who also managed the facility, tried hard to make us happy and comfortable. All in... More

We did arrive in Seward with no reservation. We stopped in few hotels asking for one night quotation and pricing were above the budget assigned to Seward for accommodation. We asked at Van Gilder and received a good quotation for a shared bathroom double room. The owner at the reception has been professional and very kind. The hotel is absolutely heritage... More

It took at least 4 phone calls to book a room, no one called me back. After asking for a top floor room, Bay view as advertised, we were given the key to a second floor room overlooking the alley! Besides no amenities and never anyone at the desk, at checkout we were admonished by the so called manager for... More

We enjoyed our stay here! Room is very small and simple but clean and cozy. Free Wifi and coffee in the morning. Bed was very comfortable. Our desk clerk (Chris?) was awesome! He works at a couple of other places, so leaves a sign with his phone number when not immediately there - but very easy to get a hold... More

First time I stayed at a B&B type hotel. Didn't know what to expect. But pleasantly surprised. Hesitated since I read that it has ghosts. But the stay was fine. We were in the suite that can sleep 5 people. Hotel was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Our toilet didn't work but the staff tend to it... More

We were lucky to find this place. We had our booking at a different hotel in Seward, something went wrong with the booking, and we had no place to stay. Danny had two rooms which had a shared bathroom, which is not usually open for reservation. Rooms were good, he went above and beyond to help us feel comfortable at... More

Although a historic building, it is terrible. Very uncomfortable, housekeeping missed us, no hair dryer, lights burned out, disabled fire alarm, front desk available by phone, voucher for breakfast at a dive. The only decent thing was the bed.
