We had reservations here during our trip west but got an early call from the owner explaining that they were to have an earlier than average cold snap and would have to winterize the cabins early. They were sorry and could have just said good luck on finding something else, but instead, they made reservations for our party of four... More

We stayed at the Shady Rest Motel in August during a 7-week road trip, and it remains one of our favorite places to stay on the whole trip. It truly was a shady rest for weary travelers. We stayed in one of the newer cabins at the top, and parked in a spot close to our cabin. The cabin was... More

Stayed at the Shady Rest for three days in September in the Hunters Lodge. Very clean and tons of room. Very centrally located for all activities including Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and don't miss the chuck wagon dinner at Blue Bell Lodge in Custer State Park. John and Ann were wonderful hosts. It was nice to come in each night... More

My excellent rating is meant for the motel/cabin type category. This place is cute, quaint, comfortable, clean, affordable, and has a great location. We traveled through the Badlands and stayed here for 2 nights while touring Black Hills, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore. It was a great home base. The owners are great. Nice staying in a family owned... More

Shady Rest Motel was a great find--affordable and conveniently located. My daughter and I stayed three nights. It was clean and cozy. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Ann but John was very nice. As others have stated, this is not a five star hotel. However, if you would like something charming and easy to return to after a... More

We chose this lodging based upon Trip Advisor reviews, price, and location. I might have avoided it based upon a first impression from the photos, with its bright yellow paint--not my favorite-- but I'm glad I relied on the reviews! It is a gem of a place--a cluster of old-fashioned individual cabins, freshened with newer fixtures, carpet, beds, and heating/air... More

These cabins are a really good choice for a stay in Custer. They are clean, cute and cozy. The hosts are really friendly and helpful and the cabins are well equipped. The location is convenient for visiting the great Custer State Park and the Wind Cave National Park.

Anne and John are absolutely the best people you will ever meet! They made us feel right at home. These are full service cabins, you make your own meals! They provide silverware, pans, plates, bowls, toaster, microwave, can opener, towels, soap for hands and shower, all bedding pillows and t.p and free wifi and air conditioning.. There is fresh brewed... More

This place was great. It was easy to find in the center of Custer. We didn't want to stay in Rapid City or Keystone. Since we traveled at the end of the Sturgis Bike Rally it was hard to find rooms. Ann worked with us to make sure we were accomodated. They stayed up late for our arrival after 10:00... More
