Having read some interesting reviews with complaints about food choice, buying over priced fish, being dictated to by the crew on bedtime etc I was a tad thoughtful as we approached our Escape. Every potential worry was totally unfounded. The crew were excellent as was the food. We pottered around the lake and its waterways after our route was explained... More

A one night trip on the backwaters started at noon. You have your own Captain, Mate and Chef. Ours were all friendly but only the chef spoke a little English. We travelled the waterways for a couple of hours before switching for an hour or so to a small vessel to see the 'real' local life. The food was well... More

Hello Avante540! The title of your review had us at ‘hello’ and we hope you had just that. You can be sure we’ll run a thorough check of the boat roofs. We definitely don’t want our guests to share the luxury of the privacy we’re known for on the backwaters with unwanted “visitors”. We haven’t heard of this issue before... More

Wonderful, peaceful, calm very serene experience. Houseboat in very good clean condition (Periyar). Air conditioned bedroom for sleeping. No mosquitoes. Food was excellent, fish for lunch, chicken for dinner. Freshly made pineapple juice.Requested a mixture of Indian food and regular western food for breakfast, idli and masala omelet. Hello Lynn0225! The River Escapes team is glad to have hosted you aboard Periyar. It's heartening knowing that your floating home has made for wonderful memories. The canoe ride offers some interesting insights, doesn't it? Yes, the children do enjoy receiving pens but we are sure your cheerful waving had them happy, too. You know where to find us the... We, the four of us (two couples) were looking forward to a unique adventure and insight into a slice of the real India - and we got it. It was a short trip; we were shown to our Boat on time, around noon, introduced to the crew, Captain, Chef and two other crew members who seemed to do most things.... More

Hello roadless120! Discerning travellers like you make us take pride in our work and push us to do better. A slice of the real backwater experience is what we promise and have largely delivered, going by your words. Even the smallest of things matter to us, which is why we will certainly look into the seafood episode, the food served... More

This was a truly wonderful experience. My husband and I were the only passengers on the riverboat with three staff. The staff served lunch not long after we boarded. They then moored the boat for a while the staff enjoyed their meal. We rested and once the boat got underway once more we enjoyed the changing scenery and the serenity.... More

Hello Flitterfin296! Reading the word 'wonderful' twice in the span of a few sentences is proof for us that we are doing this right. A moving tapestry of the backwaters is precisely what we had in mind when we put in those large windows. There's something about the sun setting against the backwaters and the paddy fields that is mesmerizing,... More

Beautifully appointed houseboats take you for a cruise to the lifeline of Kerala, backwater ways which connect mainland Kerala to coastal Kerala. Three people, the boat captain, the cook, and the cook's assistant, are at your service the entire time catering to your every need. Freshly prepared lunch, dinner and breakfasts with authentic Kerala flavors are a treat. You get... More

HelloTarun K! Our houseboats, what we fondly call kettuvallams, are our prized possesions and we are glad you noticed. Beyond being vessels of transport, they are a piece of history in themselves. Here's why: made of jackfruit tree wood, they are hand-stitched by local craftsmen using coconut fibre rope (coir) and strengthened with fish oil. This technique pre-dates industrial engineering... Our overnight stay with River Escapes came at a point when we needed to recharge and experience some tranquility. The handcrafted houseboat was amazing with not a single nail used. We had a two room houseboat with upper deck. The rooms were small but clean and the well functioning en-suite was a welcome surprise. We had lunch at Marari Pearl... More

Hello Amrita! Combining time at our beachfront Marari Pearl resort and our backwater sojourn – you hit the nail right on its head (we just had to use that pun!). Looks like you loved every bit of your escape from the madding crowd – no honking, the unhurried pace of the backwaters, losing and finding yourself in a book and... More

One night was good, but I think two would have been better. The boat was luxurious, much better than I had expected. The crew were very friendly - the chef cooked a good lunch and dinner - basic Keralan fare. The journey from the boatyard to our mooring was peaceful, although the morning trip back to the yard was a... More

After arriving to the docking point tired and unwell after a 5 hour journey I was a little bit apprehensive of what to expect. I had all sorts of thoughts about what the boat would be like, and if I could eat any of the food ( I had Delhi belly). We were welcomed on the boat by a really... More
