Chandalar Ranch is great for aurora viewing, the view is not obstructed, and you can see aurora from a wide angle. However, their staff was very rude when we joined their organized trip to ice fishing and dog sledding. During the ice fishing trip, they did not tell us which lake we were heading to, leaving us wondering during the... More

We arrived here recently in March. And the service is the poorest we've ever seen. Staff here seems unfamiliar with the all the snow activities and they are very mean and harsh. They hold no enthusiasm towards their job at all. Poor facility and poor service.

If you can stand the weather and stay outside is a great place to view the aurora. The house itself was a bit smelly and it looked very unkempt. There were very uncomfortable chairs that you could use to see a great film of the auroras. Very rustic. Outside in the veranda there were chairs so you could see the... More

We stay here form 2102.10.26 to 2012.11.01. for waiting the aurora. It's nice and comfortable cabin. We are lucky to see the north dancing light just one night, and have a good experience of ice fishing with Keith! Hope we can go to Alaska again.

I didn't stay at Chandalar Ranch but I paid for their "aurora tour". I was picked up at my hotel in Fairbanks at 10:30 p.m. on March 20, 2014 (spring equinox) and returned to my hotel some time around 2:30 or 3:00 a.m. The driver, George, was friendly and informative. The people at the ranch were all very nice. I... More

Maggie is a very nice host. I booked 3 night of a bed in the dorm via email with no drama, she replied my request very fast. The place is about 20 mins drive from Fairbanks, great location with only a little light pollution from Fairbanks makes it perfect for aurora observation. The hostel style male dorm was ok, two... This is a prime aurora viewing location as opposed to a real hotel. Aurora viewing is impacted severely by a number of things that management could fix if they were paying attention and actually wanted to do so: 1.people use headlamps and white flashlights which interfere with serious photographers. 2.none of the foreign guests appear to understand proper protocol for... Never been ice fishing before, my friends and I signed up for the ice fishing + aurora viewing tour at Chandalar Ranch. For $175, it's definitely one of the worst tour I've attended. The tour started early morning. We were first transported in a Ford E-series van. When the last three guys joining the tour arrived, despite the van is... More

I did not stay at Chandalar Ranch, but came there as part of a tour led by Ben Boyd to see the aurora. I was there from around 11pm-2:30am. There is a very nice living space upstairs filled with couches and a large TV- it was a perfect place to warm up in between taking pictures of the aurora! There... More

We did not stay at the ranch as overnight guests, but paid a $30 per person fee for the opportunity to hang out from 9:30 pm until 2:30 a.m. in the morning, waiting for the aurora to appear (we drove from Fairbanks in our rental car). It is a great location, with a large field and wide open view of... More
