I stayed at the Independent for four nights and was surprised that this place is rated so highly on TripAdvisor. On the plus side, the bed was very comfortable, the room was artful and hip and had high ceilings, and the bathroom was pretty large. And, it was relatively inexpensive ($139/nt on a Travelzoo special which included a small continental... more

We reserved a king deluxe with a sofa bed and upon arrival were given a king room without a sofa bed. We were quickly changed to a room with a sofa bed but it was directly off the lobby. When you opened the sofa bed you could not get out and around the king bed, that was how close together... more

We stayed here for two nights - in beautifully decorated spacious king size room on the top floor. I agree with the earlier reviewer's comment that its how you wish your home was decorated. Lots of nice touches - the kitchenette area, a light breakfast delivered in the mornings, free calls in the US and free wifi. We were able... more

From an unfriendly welcome, to paint peeling in the halls, to a noisy room, (broken air conditioner, raucous bar in the building behind us), and to a dilapidated although free computer room, the independent was a disappointment on almost all counts. Their one saving grace is they did allow us to bring our dog when our dog sitter bailed on... more

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in mid-September 2008. I think it had recently just opened. We loved our room! We had a room with a king sized bed that seemed more like someone's condo than a hotel. We had come to Philly from another hotel (we were on the tail end of a business trip), and... more

We arrived in Philly to do the standard tourist thing only to realize there is no way to do it in one day so we spontaneously decided to spend the night. It was 5pm at the hight of tourist season and this was the only hotel we could find a room in that didn't cost $400 a night! What a... more

If you want to be centrally located in Philly, you can't do much better than The Independent. Easy walking distance to everything and for those things you can't walk to, you have plenty of public transit options. Staying at this hotel makes a car completely unecessary. The owners did a fantastic job of renovating a classic building and making it... more

We had such a nice stay. This is in a perfect location, easy to walk around. The staff is awesome, the room is beautiful. We felt like we were staying in a friends guest room. It doesn't feel like a hotel at all. We would highly recommend this hotel. more

I found a great rate for the Independent online and booked two rooms for one night in May. I was traveling with my adult daughter and my brother and sister-in-law. After I called to see what the sleeping arrangements would be in the room I was sharing with my daughter, we were upgraded to a loft/queen room. Jim, the manager,... more

We stayed at the Independent for a short weekend and loved it! The room was beautiful- exposed brick, nice details, high ceilings. Perfect location- we had our car with us but we never moved it because everything was within walking distance. We had dinner at Tria just a few blocks away- great little inexpensive restaurant with a wide selection of... more
