I had a good experience at Portland Square, so conveniently located near Times Square. I arrived in the morning and was planning to check my bag in one of their convenient lockers. However, the courteous desk clerk informed me I had been upgraded (from double w/shared bath) to a double with private bath and could check into my room right... more

ONE WORD TERRIBLE!!! Dont believe anyone who gives this place a rating higher than 1, as it shouldn't even get a rating. We stayed at this dive for 1 night and escaped, initially booked over the internet for 8 nights but 1 night was too much. Staff rude arrogant and self important, We have stayed in numerous hotels, across the world... more

I just stayed there last week and was most likely in the renovated portion of the hotel. The room was ready and we were able to check in at noon with no problem which was a complete surprise. It had a very comfy bed and clean bathroom and the room was quite spacious by NYC standards. The staff could not... more

We just returned from staying a week in NYC at the Portland Square Hotel. This was my first stay in NYC and this hotel helped make it a great stay. As with many other reviews with for this hotel I agree that "Its not a pretty hotel, but its still a great hotel". With that statement let me expand. Its... more

Hotel bargains in Manhattan are as rare as snow in the Sahara - we all know that. At $300 per night (including tax), this hotel is not my idea of a bargain but even if it was available at half-price I would advise you to stay away. Someone needs to send a clear message to these people that this standard... more

After one miserable night trying to avoid touching any surface--dirt-streaked walls, black mold in broken tile, thin, stained carpet covering holes in the floor, filthy window--we cancelled the rest of our stay first thing the next morning. They charged us for an extra night because we "hadn't cancelled 24 hours ahead." Later, our new hotel's staff and the tourist bureau... more

I enjoyed my stay here. There were 4 of us and we stayed for 4 nights. Just off of Time Square. Delis nearby..Subway easy to get to. It was a small room, but it did not matter--it was clean and well kept. It was the perfect place to stay. It may seem a little shabby in the carpets but the... more

Although this hotel is in a brilliant location, on 47th Street, just off Times Square, the actual rooms are horrible. The room we stayed in was nothing like the pictures featured on their website. We had a twin room with ensuite, but it was poky, you couldn't swing a cat. There was no wardrobe or mirror in the bedroom. The... more

This hotel makes an excellent base for visiting Manhattan. Theatre district and times square on your doorstep, with subway at either end of the street and central park 15 mins walk (also plenty of carts selling coffee and croissant for $2 - good way to start the morning!). The hotel itself is basic and rather dated so you need to... more

We had a bad experience from the minute we checked into the hotel. The service was terrible. They could not find the reservations and were not helpful about it at all, even when we showed them the e-mail confirmation printout. They made us call expedia. They finally found our reservation, which they made a mistake mispelling my name. When we... more
