The Excelsior is that New York rarity these days, a small, intimate yet sophisticated hotel. Our family of three was comfortable and happy in a front suite. All the services,distractions and restaurants of the Upper West Side were outside our door, and the rest of New York was a fast subway ride away.

Judging by other tripadvisor reviews we had expected poor, even rude, service and indifferent staff; nothing could be further from the truth. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. This location is great for the Natural History Museum and Central Park. The neighborhood is wonderful and is full of nice little shops and Irish pubs. Short walk over to 79th and Broadway for the 1 Train, or just to the corner for others. We did not find the hotel's breakfast to be a value and do not recommend it... More

I liked this hotel... neat and decent sized rooms (considering it is Manhattan) - warm staff who made me feel welcome, and a set of good restaurants close by to chose from for dinner -

They promised a room with one (adult sized) bed and gave us two "twins" that are smaller than standard children's beds. They would not let us out of our reservation or change rooms. And they were unprofessional to us and our travel agent. TERRIBLE, RUDE service. DO NOT STAY HERE.
