This was a great place to stay- I went with family, parents et al... The restaurant downstairs served hot breakfast in the morning, rooms were clean, sheets were fresh and the subway is a block or so away. If you want to live in a very vibrant place without worrying abt bedbugs this is your hotel... as for the transient... More

First of all, I recommend this hotel only if you are young and open minded. Me and my wife stayed 7 nights in mid-May and in three or four of them we saw prostitutes and even transvestites going out with their clients... But don't get a wrong idea; even considering this fact, this is a very good hotel, especially if... More

My girlfriend and I stayed there for a night. The location is wonderful; the neighborhood is simply convenient and appealing in almost every possible way. And the bedding was nice. But there was obviously no effort of noise-proof whatsoever. I could literally hear everything from the street and it was almost impossible for me to sleep. Oh, did I mention... More

We stayed at the hotel for five nights. Rooms are clean but tiny. The spot is really perfect to start the New York adventure. There's also a very nice pub downstairs ... Andy is very friendly! I'll definitely come back.

I love this place. My wife hates it. The staff is very friendly and professional. The location is the most colorful in the city, the subway is in eyesight, Washington Square is about 5 blocks, the area is filled with students and artists... Rooms are tiny, the water temperature is erratic, the steps are steep. My wife, rightly so, has... More

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for five nights from the 8th to 13th April. I already knew the area having lived 2 blocks away for nearly a year and deliberately chose the place for its fantastic location. Contrary to some reports, this area is one of the safest in NYC with an abundance of nightlife, theatres, cinemas,... More

I have to hand it to the St. Mark's Hotel, on two levels. First off, if you are looking for an inexpensive, serviceable place to overnight it in NYC, you can't do much better for your buck than this. I stayed at the Hotel for a week, stuck between the dorm I was leaving, and the shared apartment I was... More

My partner and I stayed at the St. Marks for a brief weekend in NYC March 3rd-4th. We were going to a show in LES, so the location was perfect. Overall, the stay was fine, but the hotel breaks down as below. Pros: -cheapest thing going ($130/night for a queen with private bathroom) - location is awesome, right on St... More

We stayed in St Mark's Hotel in February 2007, after a recommendation from friends of ours. This was our first visit to New York and we needed a place to stay for 5 nights, and St Mark's seems to be one of the most affordable ones, yet in a great central location in Manhattan. The hotel is in a buzzling... More

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
