New York City can be quite expensive. But if you are willing to do without the frills, St Marks Hotel is a great value. The rooms are small. No complimentary breakfast. No elevator. Quaint payment policy: Cash only; no credit cards. But it's clean and comfortable in a great location in East Village. Staff is friendly and helpful. My only... More

We basically changed the bed's orientation to create a passage all around the bed, giving us both a place to lay our bags on the floor...and hang a couple of... More

This hotel is exactly as advertised. It's basic but in a great spot. The price is one of the best in town. There was no linen in our room so the first night we used towels as blankets but after mentioning it to staff in the morning there were blankets when I returned later in the day. I would recommend... My roommate from college and I decided to meet in the city since it lies between where we live. The hotel was just what we were looking for. Nothing fancy, just 2 beds a TV that worked and a clean bathroom. It had a nice hostel feel to it. After reading reviews of other places online I was very concerned... More

I booked this hotel as part of a trip to the USA. Having stayed in hotels all over the world, from 2 star upwards, this is the worst I ever had the misfortune of setting foot in. Looking at previous reviews, we thought "it will do for 3 nights", how wrong we were. Arrived at the hotel at 9am, couldn't... More

this is the place for you. Upon walking into the "registration" area, the "rent a room by the hour" noises could be loudly heard. As a women traveling on my own, it didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. The guy behind the counter was pleasant enough, after paying cash for two nights (probably should have been another good indication... More

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
