The place small very small and dirty, maybe I got what I paid for. No maintenance. The owner of the property was very arrogant however, the care taker was very nice and polite. I will be a fool if I go back to the same place again. Never again.

If you want to stay in New York with a couple of friends and consider your lodgings a low priority, look no further. I read the previous reviews of Uptown Hostel (all at least 3 years old), and was a little concerned about it, but in hindsight, I'm glad we stayed here. We arrived late on Sunday and getting into... It is the most dirty place i have seen for a while. I think they are cleaning the hostel once a year. They had dirty sheets and bugs in the matrace. The bathroom didn't had a door and hot water. Everything was so dirty! Beside that there are very unfriendly an i didn' feel safe at all. New York has... More

Being on a 6 months round the world trip I have stayed in many places that weren't great, but this place tops it all. The house is falling apart, there is currently no water, let alone hot water. There is no heating, it is freezing in the house and the landlady will only laugh at you if you say something.... More

This place is a rat hole , not only is it filthy and smelly but they have bed bugs. I woke up the next day covered in painful bites all over. I filed a health department complaint to try and protect future travelers. The shower has not been cleaned in months if not years. Do your self a favor and... More

I stayed at this hostel and found it to be a fantastic little spot in New York to enjoy the sights, right next to the subway, cool and cleanly staff, and a relaxed environment for me to come to from a long day of sight seeing, a nice common room to talk to other guests from around the world about... it was my second time staying there. very cheap accomodation a block away from popeye's, starbucks, duane reade's and the express subway that will get you to manhattan in only 20 mins. love the staff, free TV, internet and kitchen to use for everyone. not 5 star clean, but ok.

Staying in Harlem

Neighborhood Profile
Harlem
As a hub of African American culture, Harlem has played a vital role in the history of New York City. Today, the neighborhood is as vibrant as ever as new businesses and developments go up next to local institutions. The heart of the neighborhood is bustling 125th Street, where street vendors and historic landmarks like the Apollo Theater mingle with big-name stores. Turn down almost any corner, and you’ll discover some of the most beautiful blocks in the city, filled with handsome brownstones, soul food restaurants, corner shops, and scenic parks. For a taste of a real New York neighborhood, it’s hard to top a visit to Harlem.
