Hotel is located near the F line, so easy to reach from Newark airport. It's right next to a small park and a huge Whole Foods store. Reception was extremely friendly and helpful. Room on the third floor had two double beds for two adults, which made it really crammed. Beds, however, were wonderful. Room had a flat tv, microwave,... More

So maybe it's just the location--fronting dirty, ugly East Houston--but I found myself underwhelmed with this hotel. The furnishings are tired, with pilled linnens and cracks in the tub--the tub that provided no hot water for my shower this morning. Reception was friendly, but every time I saw the gentleman at the desk, he was in deep conversation with the... More

Stayed here for the first time on a business trip - switched from Sheraton. Let me start off by saying this is not a 4 or 5 star hotel. It may have been when it was first opened but it is now in need of a little TLC. The room was clean and I had a double bed - I... More

I booked a stay at the GEM Soho through Choice Hotel points. GEM is part of Choice's 'Ascend' collection, which are mostly upscale hotels throughout the US. This hotel turned out to be anything but a GEM. Because I used points, the front desk staff put me in a room in the basement, with a window on the roof to... More

Small modern room. TV remote a bit confusing/clock radio a bit confusing-simple instructions would help. Room modern, basic, clean. Front desk staff very helpful and friendly. Location and staff and proximity to F train/whole foods/broadway/east village/soho/nyu make it awesome.

The GEM is lucky enough to be in a really cool area of Manhattan, with lots of great little restaurants and bars within easy walking distance, and a subway stop just across the street. The rooms themselves were fine, clean and an OK size, nothing spectacular but nothing wrong with them either. But for us, the highlight was definitely the... More

The Gem is in a great location, close to subway, shops, & some great restaurants & bars. I also found the staff awesome, they were really really helpful. The bed was super comfy & the bathroom clean & tidy, however the rooms are really really small. I was travelling on my own & found the room small...can't imagine fitting 2... More

We went in NY for a girlfriend weekend and the hotel's location was perfect for us to visit the city. Close to the subway, 10 min from Brooklyn and Time Square. Great location. If your goal it's not to stay at the hotel all day, this hotel is perfect. Clean and the staff is very helpful and nice. I recommend... More

Stayed here in Mid August (there were 6 of us, so we have some statistics:). Location is really great - a few subways stops nearby, whole foods etc. Also quite convenient to get to and from the airport (unless the line closes on the day you take the trip, like it happened with us:)) The rooms were really small -... I'll never stay here again and you all should be warned that they sell the rooms in the basement. Yes, the basement. These rooms are not denoted on their website so you have no way of knowing if that's what you're getting until you check in. They are exactly the same price as rooms on above ground levels, ie $200+... More

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
