Villa 121 is a magnificent brownstone set in a leafy residential street in Harlem. We were treated to an effusive welcome by hosts, Lloyd & Peggy Toone, who have owned and lovingly restored this large house since the '80s. We were given a choice of two huge rooms, both of which were very comfortable with private bathrooms, & then invited... More

I was totally surprised by the hospitality and warmth of Peggy and Lloyd. The Harlem Renaissance is epitomized in the ambiance of Villa 121, Harlem, NY. I stayed in the Green Suite...so quaint with all the amenities to make it just wonderful. I did not want to leave! If you really want to experience peace and real pleasure, Villa 121... More

I have been meaning to write a review since June 2014 (sorry it is a year late!). I went on a 'ninja' holiday to have time to myself in New York before meeting up with my family for a family function! I could not have picked a more perfect guesthouse for my ninja getaway! Peggy and Lloyd are two of... More

My husband was determined to stay in a proper "borough" rather than the main part of the city and so Harlem it was... So we booked Villa 121 as we read up about it and wanted to stay somewhere that had the same "friendly, family vibe" that we ourselves try to achieve in our own place - and what a... More

My husband and I are both medical doctors from other country. This is our first time to stay at B&B in US. The Villa is an old beautiful house with 125 years, and its wonderful hosts, Peggy and Lloyd had restored it perfectly with their own artwork. The whole house is very warm and astonishing. The room is very clean... More

This was our second trip to New York and we wanted somewhere more local. As big jazz and soul fans we chose Harlem and Villa 121 - and we're glad we did. Everything about the stay was good. As a family of four, we had the whole top floor to ourselves (two ensuite bedrooms and an impressively equipped kitchen). It... More

Villa 121 is a refreshing change from a hotel stay. Due to the warm weather Sept 22-26, I was able to sleep with the window open facing the backyards. It is amazing how silent the neighbourhood is - in spite of the close proximity to a main boulevard. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. My room was comfortable and... More

My husband and I spent the September 19-22 weekend in NYC and stayed at this marvelous guest house. It was cozy and very inviting. The hostess and host (Peggy and Lloyd), were charming and very friendly. It is not the traditional B&B, they do not serve meals, but it is centrally located. There were wonderful restaurants and cafes a block... More

I'm a business traveler frequenting the standard hotel chains Marriott Hilton W and some in between. But this trip to NYC I wanted something different and chose Villa121! Nothing like a hotel but a charming and elegant reminder of a time when people enjoyed their homes and loved having people over! Both owners themselves were charming and elegant, welcoming me... When renovations at my own NYC apartment got too noisy, I decided to go on a mini trip within the city. Then I thought why go to a boring hotel when you could go to a guest house? I was beyond happy with my decision! First things first, Peggy and Lloyd have got to be the nicest guest house owners... More

Staying in Harlem

Neighborhood Profile
Harlem
As a hub of African American culture, Harlem has played a vital role in the history of New York City. Today, the neighborhood is as vibrant as ever as new businesses and developments go up next to local institutions. The heart of the neighborhood is bustling 125th Street, where street vendors and historic landmarks like the Apollo Theater mingle with big-name stores. Turn down almost any corner, and you’ll discover some of the most beautiful blocks in the city, filled with handsome brownstones, soul food restaurants, corner shops, and scenic parks. For a taste of a real New York neighborhood, it’s hard to top a visit to Harlem.
