I stayed here about 7 years ago on a research trip to New York and from these reviews it looks as though it hasn't changed - except for the art on the walls. Personally I loved it. I was almost 60 at the time and it brought back memories of a bohemian past which I thought had disappeared into the... More

I was hoping this booking would work out after reading so many bad reviews - it was in such a good location, and it was in our price range, and we could get a room that had three beds in it - which we needed, and seemed to be pretty rare. And in truth, it was fine. The location is... More

I think many of the reviews already cover the key points about this hotel, so I will try not to be too redundant. However, some things are worth repeating. It's unique. It's inexpensive. It's for a certain kind of person and you will know by the reviews if you will feel comfortable here. If you need matching sheets, an elevator,... More

Listen, I know there's a large chunk of travellers that want the beige linens and the generic wallpaper and the plastic cups with plastic wrap over them and the crappy standard framed art on the walls- if you are this person, you are not going to enjoy the carlton arms. if you are a lou reed-loving, basquiat-worshipping, street-art fanatic who... Depressing. Filthy. Bad vibe. I was scared in my room. My room: Huge holes in the walls. Broken mirrors and my sixth story window had this sign taped to the broken pane: "Do not touch, it may break." Springs popping out the bed, bedding worn and dirty looking. Am so glad I never have to return. Two nice things: I... More

As a first time NYC visitor, this hotel was a great find. Location is everything. it is unique and creates a memorable experience. very friendly and helpful staff. Expect the unusual, all rooms decoratively painted in a mixture of artistic styles. No TV (thank God), sometimes uneven flooring but inexpensive and did I say location?

As viclapp already mentioned here, this place is not for everyone. But if you appreciate art and if you are still laid back for yourself, you will definetly appreciate this place. It`s well located, has a great Bagelshop next door and a Sushi- master at DÀgostinos across the street. You can walk from there to Empire State Building, Gran Central... More

As another reviewer has already mentioned here, this place is not for everyone. But if you appreciate art, the bohemian lifestyle, a laid-back attitude and are flexible, this hotel is most perfect! It has a fascinating history (read about it), a very friendly and helpful staff, and is most welcoming and comfortable. Where else can you stay with two cats... More

This place is fast becoming my home away from home in New York. This stay was at the beginning of December for my first solo trip to NYC. I arrived at around 7am after a overnight bus trip to the city. I was beyond exhausted and the front desk guy saw it on my face the second I made it... More

Stayed here in July 2013 and we loved it (had to put 2014 as it was only option). It's def not for everyone, it's very colourful - in every sense of the word. The history of the building is def worth reading up on and adds to the experience. Not the most luxurious of places by a long shot, no... More
