The hotel is an old landmark. It's been nicely redone. The elevators do smell as other reviews have stated...I think it's just because the building is old. As for stained carpet in the halls, it looks very expensive & new, it appears to have been improperly cleaned which would cause a stain. I would not recommend the hotel restaurant. The... More

A historical landmark in downtown San Diego. We stayed on the Christmas Eve. The valet is $42 per day. The lobby is absolutely stunning. It gives a grand feel and is also very bright at the same time. The holiday decorations are gorgeous too. Booked a Legacy Suite and was told that there was no room available for upgrade which... First, this is clearly a "classic" hotel in every sense of the word. But in some senses, that just means old and a little worn out. The rooms are small and for some reason the very small bathrooms with large showers (which are nice with nice water pressure) have bowl sinks that, although trendy, are very impractical as they add... Thank you for the fair and balanced review! I can always appreciate realistic expectations and we in the hotel industry know that everyone's expectations are different. That is why we can have a guest stay in one room and give us 5 star review with glowing praise and then another guest stay in that exact same room and not rate... More

I know this is an older building and the history behind it but I wasn't expecting to feel so boxed in. Aside from the small room, the hotel was lovely. It's right near downtown so it's a fast walk to restaurants and bars downtown. The employees here were pretty nice for the most part. I don't think I would stay... More

Smack downtown San Diego, this is one beautifully preserved old-school hotel. Fabulous lobby and service, modern rooms retain historical features. Steps from all the downtown shopping and fun. Just gorgeous.

There is nothing luxurious about this property. It's old and worn out. Maybe the bathrooms were updated but not the rooms? Carpet is disgusting, the type you don't want to walk barefoot on. Bed worn out and very uncomfortable. Table lamps lopsided due to too many falls. Windows rattle every time a large vehicle goes by. Location is good except... More

If these walls could talk I would hope they would not beg! On one hand I am disappointed that the physical aspects of the property did not meet your expectations. Yes, we do have a hefty maintenance schedule due to the historic nature of the property and we are entering toward our next face-lift, but mostly I wanted to thank... More

This is our favorite place to stay when my husband has business in town. It’s centrally located. Directly across the street is a mall though right now it is under construction. Some stores are still open including Nordstroms, but the stores don’t have the variety that are offerd in other malls. Across the street to the left leads into the... More

While reading your review I was imagining a room literally moving about the hotel waiting to trick guests into staying in it and then giving them a bad experience. Maybe you are onto something... maybe each hotel has a room lurking about trying to ruin their reputation! Reminds me of the old board game "Clue".... "It was room 403 with... More

During a recent business trip, the conference I attended chose the US Grant as the sponsored hotel. The convenient location, courteous staff, and old school elegance were the perfect combination for a pleasant trip. The hotel is 10-15 minutes from the airport located in downtown San Diego. Being from the east coast, I didn't realize how condensed and large San... More

Wow and I love your review style Travellerette! I like the way you travel actually, person to person. You explore the public transportation and truly get involved in the areas around and outside the city. It is interesting, San Diego is really a compact downtown area, but you are right it does sprawl quite a bit and some of those... More

We recently stated at the US Grant Hotel, San Diego for a quick anniversary getaway. The hotel was very distinctive. The lobby is grand with beautiful chandeliers, vintage elevators and a live pianist. I was not impressed with the room though -KING GRAND DELUXE , a corner room on the 11th floor. the room was very compact; it had a... More

A bit of a mixed bag in this one. I would say good choice in getting the Grand Deluxe room as there are only 3 in the hotel but each one is a little different. I am so sorry that one of the other ones was not available to switch you to! No need to address the carpet comments as... More

Loved the U.S. Grant- stayed three nights, room was clean and pretty, beds very comfortable, room service was delicious and timely on the day we ordered it and the staff was friendly. Close to Horton Plaza, abundant dining and a nice walk to many local attractions. We visited for the San Diego Food and Wine Festival and would happily return... More

Huh.... this is maybe among the most interesting reviews we have had. I can honestly say I haven't heard this about the Taxis before. Granted like anyone I have heard things about taxis being unfriendly or gruff like in any city (hence the emergence of Uber and such) but this is a unique one! Proud to hear the great comments...
