GOOD POINTS : Friendly, helpful staff. Hotel very centrally located to lots of attractions, one of the cleanest hotels I have ever stayed in. Lovely complimentary breakfast and easy to use complimentary safe in room and free internet. Good value for money. BAD POINTS: One of the noisiest, squeakies beds I have ever slept in :-( reported to staff but... more

I stayed here for 3 nights and was very satisfied. While the rooms are basic and cozy, they are clean and have amenities like a dvd player, fridge, microwave, and free wifi. What made the stay memorable was the accommodating and friendly staff. Since I was here for the marathon, they left a goody bag with bottled water, candy, and... more

There are many reviews of this hotel available and most are very good. I stayed here in May 2009 for a conference and found it met my needs very well. It is clean, comfortable and well-maintained. The shared wash-room and shower areas and very well kept and modern. The rooms, while small by American hotel standards, are certainly of an... more

I wish i could give a better review to the Occidental -- the staff were great, it was very clean, if basic, but we actually moved to a different hotel after three nights because the bed was so hard and uncomfortable. Even my husband, who usually can sleep on anything, couldn't deal with the bed there. Also, my husband needed... more

We got upgraded (i think), but the our room is old style but beautifully restored to like new. It is basic but spacious, the most spacious so far. Unlike every other hotel i have stayed in my two month trip on both USA coasts breakfast is served until 11am (most were 9.30) and was fantastic for a continental breakfast. The... more

We stayed 3 nights in a full en-suite room. The Occidental is located around 15/20 mins from Downtown, which meant you can walk to the Gaslamp area, and catch a taxi back for less than $10. There are also regular buses outside up to the Hillcrest district and downtown. The room was spotless, almost sterile !! The bathroom and room... more

My name is Cameron Elliott, and I stayed at the Occidental 4/20/09-4/22/09. This was my first stay there. Before I picked the Occidental, I researched sites at tripadvisor.com. Initially, I was suspicious of all the positive feedback on Tripadvisor, and I had to wonder if the owners were posting their own positive ratings for the hotel. But I have to... more

Exceeded expectations. Ok, this hotel is not by any means a hostel. Yes, the bathrooms are outside of the rooms, but they are private and immaculately clean. This is typical European style, and save considerable costs for the hotel that translates to cheaper rooms. The hotel is in the city, but a little outside of downtown, but the area is... more

I recently stayed here for 6 nights while in town for a conference. Free bike rental a big plus- made it easy to bike to the convention center or just about anywhere in town. The room was small and completely adequate, with a sink, microwave and refrigerator. Super helpful in cutting costs of eating out. I would also recommend hooks... more

I stayed four nights while attending a conference at the convention center. It is a 1.3 mile/30 minute walk to the convention center (about 4 blocks of this is up/down hill). This hotel was perfect for my budget. I had a twin room with shared bath. The shared toilet and shower were clean, and I never had to wait to... more
