First I would say the location is great. The staffs and janitors are nice and helpful. Now is something you need to know before you decide to stay here. This is a hostel, not a hotel. They should change the name. Still even with hostel standards, I stayed in a few hostels before and they were much better. The pictures... More

The rooms are indeed spartan, but quite clean with a nice big window, wardrobe, desk, and ceiling fan. Even in August, it wasn't hot (but then again, I'm from a tropical climate so San Diego weather is quite tolerable for me). The bathrooms are shared, but clean and I had no problems getting into one at any time of the... More

We found the web site misleading, as we did not catch that this place is a converted YMCA and the rooms do not have their own bathrooms. If you are looking for a cheaper option in San Diego, you may want to stay a bit further out from downtown, and then you can still get your own bathroom! Also, our... More

Hi Socali123, Thank you for your review. While certain rooms on the property are hostel rooms, the majority are standard hotel rooms with shared bathrooms. This is expressed on our website under each room type. Please do send our apologies to your friends who, by accident, walked into an occupied room. We strive to provide high quality customer service so... More

Clearly an example of exploitation of needy travelers. Nearly 200 a night for a tiny room with flimsy bunk beds and drunk partiers making noise all night. This is not a hotel but rather a hostel with hotel prices. Bathrooms are shared. WiFi didn't work either. I slept two hours and left as early as possible the next day. Rip... More

Do yourself a favor and do not stay at the 500 west hotel. The hotel is run down, I walked into my room and the cockroach on the wall fled. The room smelled like urine. There is no bathroom with the room, and hallway was so noisy I was afraid to leave to use it. There was noise all night.... More

Very good localization!! It's more of a hostel than a hotel. It's not a 5 star hotel, of course, the bathrooms are shared, no food, wifi doesn't work on the bedroom, and the elevator is just SO SLOW!! Overall, the bedroom is clean, tv, clean towels and sheets, fan on the bedrooms, comfortable beds, good bathroom. Really nice place to... More

Hi Debora, Thank you for taking a moment to write a review of your recent stay. We agree that we have an amazing location-- just a short, several minute walk to the waterfront. It's really convenient for those wishing to explore our beautiful Downtown by foot. Thank you for the compliment on the cleanliness of the rooms. That is something... More

I was pleasantly surprised. This is a hostel by far more so than a hotel. I had a red-eye to catch and wanted to simply rest somewhere before my flight. Located by the main trolly and Amtrak station and not too far from he airport - this was quite a bargain. You can easily walk to the Seaport area or... More

I arrived a few days early for a conference and needed a hotel until the official conference hotel was available. I like adventure travel on my bike or with a backpack, so I found it comfortable enough. My room was quite small with a single bed and a desk. The toilets and showers are in individual common area cubicles secured... More

If you're looking for a nice hotel, then this is not the place for you. However if its a hostel you're after (which this place definitely is) then I would definitely recommend it! The location was great! Public transport was so easy! Really short walking distance to any form of transport we wanted. Plenty of great food around! Have a... More

First off, let's start by calling a spade a spade. This is not a HOTEL. This is a HOSTEL, and an extremely poor example of the genre at that. Trust me, I know hostels, having lived and traveled in a number of developing countries, where I stayed in numerous hostels that outshone this one. Were I able to give this... More
