Beware of this hotel. The hallways consistently smell like weed and the establishment is occupied by some unsavoury characters. The building is severely neglected and we no longer use the dodgy elevator due to its poor condition and unpredictable behaviour. Also the bathrooms are extremely dirty, the dirtiest bathrooms I have encountered in any hotel or hostel. On top of... More

Best aspect is location. Very basic with shared bathrooms, room was clean. Comfortable enough for price. Hotel is old and a little run down, the walls are thin and the road is noisy but our stay was fine. This accommodation is very budget style but is OK if you are after a clean bed in a good spot

misleading name its a hostel with tiny rooms and common restrooms. Carpet in room and hallway are filthy. It's like a homeless shelter. Checked in and out in 5 minutes i didn't stay. The only good thing is the location the architecture its antique and pretty and the lobby, other than that, stay away go somewhere else!

Located in Downtown. It is to walkable distance from the nightclubs and the Marina Harbor. Bathrooms and rooms clean. Great customer service. If you arrive on Saturday night you will be able to park without paying.

500 West is suitable only if you are a hostel kind of traveller. You'll know that it is hostel by the rate for a daily stay- which is about $40 for a basic room. What's not right is this accommodation mixed with other San Diego "hotels" of websites. Let it be clear: there is no grand nor mid-range hotel luxury... More

So online it calls this place a hotel and this experience was my first with a hostel. It was seriously like $30 a night in July. I was with one of my friends and we made the best of the situation. The college style living wasn't too bad for a few days. The place is a thousand years old so... More

I've been traveling around The States for 1 month and this was the worst hostel. The hostel has a great location and the lobby was awesome but the people who live there are not so awesome, are people who used to be homeless and their behavior is terrible, we ere sleeping and we woke up at 3am because they were... I woke up to a beautiful view of the Hotel del Coronado's red turrets across the bay at this historic hotel that once served as the Armed Services YMCA. The lobby looks beautiful. Although the room was tiny, the bed was comfy, and it was a restful night on the sixth floor. The rooms are available at a bargain rate... More

I stayed here 25 years ago when it was the Armed Forces YMCA established by Congress for service members' recreation after the World Wars. It's amazing how the 100 year old building has held up and the upgrade to a reasonably comfortable budget hotel. The gang showers are replaced by private toilets/showers operated by the room keycards. They check the... More
