This hotel is historic and charming. The location is convenient to downtown, the convention center and Petco Stadium. The rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable with soft sheets and plenty of pillows. The staff was not very attentive and did not offer help with the door or the elevator, unless you were handicapped. The elevator was installed... More

If this hotel was dirty it would be considered old, since it was clean it has character and was unique. Valet and check in was a breeze, the elevators up were fantastic old style elevators where you had to open the door, slide back the screen and go. Our room two queen bed room was actually divided up into to... More

I stayed at the historic St. James Hotel for several nights for the Bike the Bay cycling event. Compared to many of the surrounding hotels in the Gaslamp District, the price was reasonable at ~$163 per night. The location on 6th is great if one wishes to be right in the heart of Gaslamp. One can walk to dozens of... More

Had a girls weekend and loved the location. Matthew at the front desk was awesome and super helpful! Rooms are a bit old and the elevator is an experience. But I would recommend staying here, and may do it again on my next trip to San Diego.

I went to work a convention- 12 hour days, heavy luggage, and I needed quiet so I could work the entire week. (The Gaslamp District in San Diego is a noisy, crowded, party area so I didn't have much hope of getting a good night's rest...) I was greeted by Matthew Hall at the Front Desk. He took great care... This hotel was built in the 1900's, and that may be why some of the reviews are not very high. Personally, we loved this place. We vacation approximately 4 times a year but this was our first time in San Diego. I would definitely stay here again, just for the added charm due to the hotels age. The elevators, although... More

Very old hotel. Elevators slow, different. Probably would not stay here again. Good location however!
