Great location, central downtown, within walking distance to beach, nightlife, baseball stadium and transport links. Solid breakfast, immaculately clean bathrooms - the absolute USP of all HI hostels i have visited hitherto - with options for solo, small and large dorms. don't go for the large dorms, they are noisy at the front of the building overlooking the street and just... After an awful experience in HI Downtown san francisco we were dreading this hostel. However, it proved not to be so bad. The breakfast was really good and the staff were friendly enough (although they could be much nicer and more welcoming). However, we requested a quiet room as we read up on reviews and took some advice from others... More

The location of this hostel is nearly ideal, and it would be hard to find a better location within San Diego. The Gaslamp district is packed with restaurants and shopping options, and it feels very safe at night. Balboa Park is close enough that you can walk there. The hostel itself is nice enough, but it didn't feel as spacious... More

We stayed at the hostel for 4 nights in May 2015. Awesome and inspiring hostel, awesome because it's located in the Gaslamp district and it's surrounded by a lot of restaurants, bars and clubs. The style of the interior is modern and a little bit minimalist, which I really like. In the hallways, there are a lot of armchairs/couches that... More

Laura S, I feel really honored that you took such good notice of our conservation notices around the hostel. Conservation and sustainability signs have been a personal effort to bring sustainability awareness to tourism, which are not often thought of together, but is an important part of our triple bottom line. Thank you for taking notice and I hope we... More

Really good location for sight seeing and nightlife. We were lucky to request a quiet room as I imagine the street facing rooms could be noisy. Beds are REALLY comfortable, we were lucky to have a private room with 4 beds for only two of us so we had a lot of space and also a good sized private bathroom.... More

Thank you so much for the kind words, lh1983. It is always particularly validating to receive a positive response from a seasoned traveler. Regarding our alcohol policy, HI USA has historically been dry (i.e., had a no-alcohol policy), however in the last couple of years we have been re-examining this and are working on ways for various hostels within the... We stayed here two nights before a trip to Cabo San Lucas. It is a fantastic location, right in the middle of downtown San Diego which means an easy walk to restaurants & bars, plus easy access to the trolley and tons of other attractions. We stayed in a private room with double bunk beds, and had our own bathroom.... More

My friend and I stayed three nights: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Very friendly staff. Free breakfast in the morning. Mainly cereal, toast, and a selection of cut up fruit. Room was nice. We stayed in a private room with twin bunk beds. Shared bathrooms with showers, which were very clean. Overall, a very pleasant stay. Our first time staying at... More

Pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay, MrReid_L. We are working on ways to improve traveler knowledge of the California drought, so I am happy to hear that you noticed some of our educational efforts. I hope we can host you on future trips to San Diego. Safe travels! More

Stayed here for a week during the first week of March. The first 3 nights I was in a private room facing the main street and the street noise was horrible and lasted till 2am even on weeknights. Room itself was very clean and cozy. If anything they were a little run down with creaking floorboards but nothing that would... More

jeans_aroundtheworld, thank you for the feedback. Our building is an historic building (nearly 120 years old), so she does have some creaks and groans, I hope you enjoyed the facilities otherwise, and I hope we may host you again in your future travels to San Diego. Safe travels to you! More

We have recently stayed here for a number of nights in a private room. We were so happy to find that this hostel offers beautiful air-conditioned rooms with modern good looking features. However the air-conditioning comes at a cost. The window is actually half open with plastic covering between the air-con and the ledge. Guess how much of the street... More

Thank you, TaylorMadeBombs, for taking the time to share your experience. We make every effort to ensure our guests comfort, but unfortunately our location is a bit of a double-edged sword. Being in the heart of things is a noisy spot to be (albeit, very convenient). For potential future guests: we do have court-yard facing rooms that do not face... More
