3 day stay: shower drain plugged, scummy water with gobs of hair floating. Another day, no toilet paper OR paper towels for 30+ rooms. All surfaces greasy/grimy throughout. Will bring sanitizing wipes to "clean" my room forever onward. Disgusting impression for international visitors. Otherwise, good location 1/2 mile from Boston's great subway. Huge, welcoming lobby with helpful desk staff, sightseeing... More

Let me start by saying that I am a backpacker. Most of my vacations involve sleeping on a sleep pad 1 1/2" thick. :) I was looking for a place to stay in Boston that was both affordable and in a convenient location. This place fit my needs perfectly. The rooms aren't fancy compared to the $300/night hotels (but then,... More

Because lodging in Boston can be extremely expensive and if you're only staying for 2-3 nights, this hostel was fine. There are shared bathrooms, which have a weird smell and make me wonder how often they get cleaned...and the rooms are very basic. You aren't given any washcloths (only towels) or shampoo, so bring your own. By no means is... More

One year after we stayed at 40 Berkeley I still have chills when I think of my experience here... Great location and compared to anything else in Boston low price. But you get for what you pay for, or less in our experience. - A clogged toilet odor was present in the hallways all the time, which was (unexpectedly) caused... More

I have shared a room with a friend in this hotel for two nights. Rooms are quite basic and old furnished. Bathrooms were shared, not very hygienic. The breakfast was ok. Although I know that it is a hostel, I have stayed in much better hostels for lower price.

I just read a few reviews implying the problems with this place should be expected because it's a hostel. I have stayed in many hostels and can say my complaints below are justified for the type of accommodation. This place has clearly put money into a cool communal area and smooth marketing, but once you get to your room, that... More

The rooms are just 4 concrete walls and a couple of military cots. There is no bathroom or shower, except a whole floor one. The food sucked and I never want to hear the word Berkeley ever again. The place was not well kept. It seemed as though the bathroom was never cleaned. The halls smelt also. The only positive... More

Great location, breakfast, and price..however, we could easily hear doors shutting (more like slamming) all night. Also, another perk for choosing this place was the free pass to a local attraction of our choice. We asked for an aquarium pass, but of course they were out and only had two attractions to choose from, neither of which were interested in.... More

Pros I loved the location of this place. It was walking distance to the most beautiful park ever! It was also pretty close to some very trendy shopping options. The bus stop and subway station were also walking distance which was great to get around Boston. The room was also very spacious which i liked. I did not feel cramped... More

Exactly what I expected from a hostel. Staff were really helpful on arrival and willing to help throughout our stay. If you are thinking of doing some of the paid attractions in Boston it might be worth booking directly with the hostel as they offer a 241 deal on certain attractions (I would check the website for full details). We... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
40 Berkeley is your best bet for affordable, dormitory-style lodging in Boston. A great alternative to expensive hotels, this clean, safe and quiet hostel is located in Boston's hip South End — a fantastic downtown neighborhood for walking to the best shopping and restaurants. It's a safe and well lit residential neighborhood just steps from Copley Square, the Back Bay, and Boston's many universities and colleges. Boston Common and the Public Gardens — with the famous duck pond and swan boats — are just a couple of the beautiful parks in the area. The location can't be beat. ... more   less
