Heater in room couldn't be controlled. Couldn't sleep it was too hot. Just had a weird retirement village feel to it as well don't stay if young Bathrooms on an entire floor were under renovation too so not in use for 3 night we were there. Breakfast was decent. But that's the best thing about it. Oh location good too.

Great location, maybe a ten minute walk from Boston Common. Serviceable, clean enough, but slightly drab. I stayed in a single room, however, so maybe the dorm rooms have more character/atmosphere. Bed was a thin mattress on a metal frame, no mattress pad, one thin blanket and pillow, rather uncomfortable. The included breakfast was a good deal, but served high... More

I really loved the atmosphere of 40 Berkeley. It was open and had room for privacy as well as a sense of belonging. The rooms were simple but very clean and efficient and the shared bathroom was immaculate. The staff was great!

After an arduous drive through the frenzy that is the streets of Boston, my two friends and I arrived at the seemingly welcoming foyer of 40 Berkeley. When checking in, the receptionist who may as well have been a wall, welcomed us with a beaming frown and the privilege of an extra charge for the person they didn't think was... More

I had a weekend trip to Boston and only stayed 1 night there. So, I only looked for a cheap hostel and thought I can sleep in a dirty place for just 1 night. But I was very surprised when I arrived at the 40Berkeley. It is a really nice hostel and I had a great view to the John... More

Ok I'll admit it I'm spoiled Shen it comes to lodging when traveling but I can rough it when I have to. All in all 40 Berkeley was fine for a cheap night or two in downtown Boston. There is no parking nearby! Street parking comes with all the time limits a metered world will burden you with. The closest... More

A weeklong stay in Boston with a friend from some years back brought me, for two non-consecutive nights, to 40 Berkeley. The website does a great job of promoting it, but don't expect the last word in luxury. The Rooms This is the first hostel I have used where every room is a private room, so that is advantageous. The... More

I was initially leery about staying in a hostel, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Pros: -Great location -Excellent price (we had a private double room with our own bathroom that was less than $100 a night during St. Patrick's Day). Our room was big with a huge closet and a decent bath. -Many different Nationalities were staying... More

Second business trip to Boston to stay in this hostel. Room this time was a little more tired than last one (first time was excellent - room fine, bathroom clean). This time the blind in the room was broken and there wasn't a rail or a shelf in the wardrobe! Communal bathroom was fine, but not as spotlessly clean as... More
