There is a very thin red line between "vintage" and "old and dilapidated". The Steinhart dangerously navigates between both sides.. Reception experience was good. I was given a key and explained the rules, which are simple enough. The elevator is outright dangerous. I am surprise this is up to par with California code, but it must have been classified as... The Steinhart is an older hotel, so some of the amenities are a bit old fashioned - like the old-style manual lift - but we found it charming! We had a one bedroom apartment on the 4th floor with a murphy bed in the living room. The apartment was huge! The bedroom was very comfortable and so was the murphy... More

A great hotel with retro charm and awesome large rooms. There for a week the space was fabulous, bath in bathroom, walk in wardrobe, fully equipped kitchen and wonderful beds. An easy walk to all attractions and Union Square. A great breakfast cafe across the road and a couple of friendly pubs in the same street provide easy amenities and... More

The steinhart is a lovely hotel with loads of period charm that could probably be more usefully described as an apartment building as there is no in house eating or bar area but rooms are equipped with kitchens and eating facilities. The foyer area and lift are beautiful and evoke a bygone era which the decoration in the other commonly... More

This is a good, no-frills accommodation in the heart of San Fran. Only a 10 minute walk to Union Square and close by shops and bars, and in a safe area. Rooms not quite as flashy as shown in pictures, but were clean and big enough for two. Full sized fridge and stove top useful for those looking to save... More

We stayed here for five nights. We arrived at around 3pm in the afternoon and there was no one at the front desk. There was another gentleman waiting to check in as well. He had been waiting 10 minutes before we got there. We called the hotel and recieved no answer, we then called the main office and they were... More

Please note that the issues that you have described in your review have been addressed accordingly. I... More

Stay here at your own risk. We arrived it was 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The front door of the hotel was locked . It took 10 minutes t raise anyone. We had 2 rooms. 1 one bedoom & 1 studio deluxe. In both case the word deluxe must be used ironically. 30 years ago things may have been new.... More

The Steinhart is more an appartment hotel that a "typical" hotel (no bar or restaurant). It's located in an old historic building in walking distance to the financial district. If you are travelling with kids there is not much to see nearby (e.g. no playground, need to take a bus to most of the attractions). We stayed in an one... More

I've been in San Francisco for the last couple of weeks by myself and knew when I was searching for a place to stay that I wanted to feel "at home" for such a long stint in the city. Normal hotels just don't provide that vibe and the Steinhart was the perfect place for my trip. I stayed in a... More
